SHEAMOISTURE Panel: Body Positivity & Self Love

It was great to see the plus size community being represented at Essence Festival.  SheaMoisture a predominantly hair company started the conversation on body positivity and self-love at Essence.  SheaMoisture thought it was important to speak on these topics as they recognize that their customer base being majority African-American women were like most women in the U.S. are plus in size.  They wanted to make these women feel included while at the Essence Festival.  With 67%. of women in the U.S. wear a size 14 or above we are a force to be seen and heard!

SHEAMOISTURE Pop-UP Shopping Center

One thing almost all women love to do is shop.  SheaMoisture all too happy to provide an excellent shopping experience.  The bring all their lines out.  From their latest hair care line featuring African Water Mint & Ginger Detox to the body care line SheaMoisture body.  There was even something for the men.  SheaMoisture brought out the men’s SheaMoisture Beard line.

They were lite bites and of course music.  There were also stylists for men and women creating some really fun hairstyle and sharp cuts.

SHEAMOISTURE Q&A hosted by Kéla Walker with Davina Bennett

Kéla Walker and SheaMoisture brand ambassador Davina Bennett had a very engaging chat.  Q&A focused on championing inclusive beauty.  They touched on everything from hating your hair as a child to now loving it as an adult.  Davina spoke about how she came into the spotlight by rocking her natural hair as a Miss Universe Contestant.  She also talked about her passion for improving life for the children within the deaf community in Jamaica.

As a confirmed bachelorette when days like Valentine day comes around I make sure to treat myself to something special.  I know a lot of girls will be showing off gifts they’ve purchased themselves aka “doing it for the gram” and claiming it’s from their man.  I’m here to say be honest.  In the words of the great Donna Marie Meagle of Parks and Recreation “Treat Yo Self!” and know it’s ok to do so.

Whether you plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day, Galentine’s Day or Singles Appreciation Day  I have made the perfect gift guide for you.

The Single Girl’s Valentine day gift guide will focus on 3 of my favorite things.  The first item will be dresses.  Dresses are an easy way to celebrate yourself and show your personality.  The second will be lingerie.  I’m a huge fan lingerie.  As a single woman, I personally wear lingerie for myself often.  It’s a great way to spice up an outlook.  Lastly purses.  Purses as an accessory are my go-to way to take a look to the next level.

 The guide’s color wheelhouse is red and pink.  Both colors have long been associated with Valentine’s day.  Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure.  Pink is the English word for a color often called rosa in Italian, German and Spanish. A color named after the most romantic flower must have something to do with Valentine’s Day! Pink is created by mixing red and white, making it a purer form of the lusty red.

Ann Taylor LOFT To Carry Plus Sizes | LOFT Plus

LOFT of the Ann Taylor or Ann Inc. brand umbrella started in 1998.  In the Loft’s Diamond anniversary year, 2018, they will be offering Plus Sizes in February.  LOFT creates modern, feminine and versatile clothing with one common style goal: to look and feel confident, wherever the day takes them.  They offer everyday essentials to  trends pieces.

LOFT in addition to just carrying straight sizes; The LOFT has petite and maternity sizes.  LOFT has been made many of their currently plus size dresses, pants, cardigans, blouses, jeans, and tees exclusively available though the plus size subscription service Gwynnie Bee.  So I was pleasantly surprised to hear while I opened my Gwynnie Bee box when I got the LOFT to carry plus size news.

Much is not known currently about what the LOFT will offer in plus sizes.  The sizing on the LOFT site stops at XXL or 18 for now.  Larger sizing on the GB website could help with getting an idea of what’s to come.

I’m in love with Chrissy’s deep pink-red lippe.  It’s called Icon by Hourglass and is available at Sephora.

This Is Us star Chrissy Metz wore a custom Ann Taylor LOFT polka dot wrap dress while on the Late Night with Seth Meyers.  Metz tagged the LOFT in her Instagram post wearing the dress on the someday as the news the LOFT’s 2018 spring collection would include plus size.  The LOFT Plus spring collection will include Metz’s polka dot dress.  Until then LOFT Plus can be closeted through Gwynnie Bee.

The pants or trouser I’m wearing are LOFT Plus through GB .  I’m wear in a size 20.  They are somewhat long as I am 5 ft even.  Normally I would have had them hemmed however I’m only borrowing this pants so I popped on a pair heels to give me more height.  The pants are very nice.  They offer a very classic yet modern look.  I would say size up in the pants for a better fit.

This camel Katherine Barclay two pocked vest with side slits is from Gwynnie Bee also.  I wearing a size xx.  The fix is well.  The color and the fabric are wonderful.  It’s polished and stylish.  Great for work or a date night.

Why Are You Single? And A Few Other Dumb Questions I’m Always Asked!

Why I’m I single?  If I hear that damn question again I just might scream.  As I roll my eyes to the back of my head I can vaguely hear in a clown voice “You’re such a pretty girl you such be in a relationship.”  That normally followed up by so more bullish I don’t want to hear like I have a friend.  Because I was raised well I just smile and give a slight giggle.  However,  I really want to say “Why have you been with (insert man’s name) for years knowing he’s cheating on you?”  or “You’re so pretty you’d think your man would be faithful.”  Is that to shady?

The whole conversation makes me so sick.  Even more than the when are you having children question.  This question is offensive on so many levels.  With so many women struggling to have children to ask a question like that can be heartbreaking.  Even to assume every woman wants children is very old school thinking.

When I’m asked what I do often times my reply depends on who’s asking?  The question what’s a blogger is not a dumb question however the questions that follow my answer to that question are often are.  In what world is it on to ask ok to ask a person how much they get paid or do you get a lot of free stuff.  You won’t ask an accountant how much they’re paid.  How about a teacher?  As for “free stuff” that’s not the case for many bloggers.  They are some “bloggers” who only talk about things they’re paid to talk about.  However, many of us are providing our true opinions when the items are free or not.

Another blog question or maybe I should say statement is “Why do you call yourself fat?  You shouldn’t say yourself fat.”  I get that a lot when I tell people that my blog’s name is The Fat Girl of Fashion.  I don’t look at the word fat as an offensively.  For me, it’s just another adjective.  Just like petite, or beautiful.  I’m happy being fat and I don’t allow other’s issue make me feel any other way.

 

ASOS Blue Dress.

This is another statement but I felt the need to add it this fun post.  You don’t have children so you don’t have responsibilities.  This statement tickles me ever time.  As if bills only arrive at your doorstep when you start a family.  Stop telling people without children they don’t have responsibilities or limitation.  I have so many bills I won’t date a man named William.

This question came up at theCurvycon.  When someone says to a plus size person you have so much confidence.  When someone says that to me I would like to myself like what?!  As if my dress size should make me less confident.  If I was a size 6 my confidence wouldn’t even be in question.  I found it funny (not) that so many attendees have experienced the same issue.

Why do women who not wear makeup and or weave feel the need to tell me with a beat face and a long Nicki weave they don’t wear makeup and or weave.  Sis, I can see that.  Hell Ray Charles can see that.  Because I choose to wear makeup or a cranial prosthesis doesn’t make me any less a natural woman.  I love a good highlight so deal with it!

Chrissy Metz, Danielle Brooks And I All Love Rubber Dresses

My recent visit to New York for New York Fashion Week included attending theCurvycon.  I had the time of my life.  My favorite part of theCurvycon had to be the Keynote with Chrissy Metz.  If you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know who she is well here’s a quick run down.

Chrissy Metz is an actress best known for her role in the NBC show “This Is Us” were she plays Kate Pearson.  The “This Is Us” series follows siblings Kate, Kevin and Randall as their lives intertwine as adults.  Kate and Kevin were originally part of a triplet pregnancy.  Born six weeks early; their biological brother was stillborn.  Their parents, Jack and Rebecca, having expected to bring home three babies, decide to adopt another newborn: Randall, a black child born the same day and brought to the same hospital after his biological father abandoned him at a fire station.  The episodes weave through the stories of the past and present of the characters, taking place in 1980, 1989–1995, and the present day.  This moving drama has tugged at everyone’s heart strings and made Chrissy a household name.  Before taking over evening TV Chrissy had smaller roles on My Name Is Earl as Chunk, and American Horror Story: Freak Show as Barbara/Ima Wiggles.

Chrissy Metz made a splash at the MTV Movie & TV Awards in an oxblood latex dress with ruffled cap sleeves and a pleated skirt by janedoelatex.

While speaking at theCurvycon Chrissy Metz was asked about her different looks and of course the red latex dress she wore to the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards came up.  The whole world had something to say about that Latex dress.  Chrissy Metz responds to critics of her sexy look by simply saying “The Kardashians do it; why can’t I?”  You can see Chrissy speaking in depth at theCurvycon on this look and how people responded to it here.

 

I agree with Chrissy.  If the Kardashians do it; why can’t I?!  I have been a huge fan of this sexy look latex/rubber look dress.  The latex dress idea isn’t new. However, modern day vixens like Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj had me wanting one so so bad.  If I did see them in plus sizes they would either be too costly and if they were affordable they looked like a Halloween costume.  That’s until now.  Club L via ASOS has given me all the sexy I wanted in a rubber dress at an pocket friendly price.

I love how I felt in my dress.  I felt super sexy and confident.  I got the bright idea to wear my dress backwards.  The zipper gives the front a little more detail.  You can see Danielle Brooks of Orange Is The New Black was feeling herself also in this high shine bodycon Club L dress. Danielle is wearing the dress on as intended.

This plus-size dress by Club L is made of high shine smooth fabric.  There is added stretch for comfort.  It has a scoop neck and sleeveless design.  The midi length close-cut bodycon fit dress has an exposed zip-back fastening.

It feels good to have options!  There are many looks I wish came in my size so I want to give Club L and ASOS a huge thank for offering this hot look I wanted.

My recent visit to New York for New York Fashion Week has taught me so much about myself.  Every time I leave Chicago I take with me all that I’ve learned from being born and raised in the city of big shoulders.  This world will chew you up and spit you out if you let it.  Are you good enough?  Are you pretty enough?  Are you thin enough?What are you wearing?  Are you on trend?  So many thoughts swirling in my head.  Self-doubt can creep in so fast.

Your mind can play tricks on you.  Having you believing everyone is doing so much better than you.  And that you will never be good enough.  What’s a girl to do?  I personally stop and thank God for keeping me in my right mind.  Take a moment and speak to your God or higher power.  Connecting with something greater than myself helps me remember the world is much bigger than myself and what I’m going through.  I like to reflect on how far I’ve come.  Be grateful for the small blessing is a way I make it through each day.

Am I good enough?  Yes!  Social media is nothing but a big Bow Wow Challenge.  That’s why I only compete with myself.  I am my only competition.  I don’t worry about the next person and what they’re doing.  Am I pretty enough?  Am I thin enough? Yes!  I don’t let the mainstream media tell me what’s beautiful.  I love my round face and brown skin.  I am gorgeous just the way I am.  I do work to improve but not to change.  There is a huge difference.

What are you wearing?  Are you on trend?  More often than not I’m wearing something from my favorite brand ASOS.  The site is updated daily so I’m always on trend.  They speak to my personal style.  So I don’t worry about what others are wearing because I’m comfortable in my ASOS style choices.  As you can see above with some of the kimono options above you have so many choices that you can freely create a look that speaks to your own personal style.

The kimono I picked is from the straight sizes.  I’m wearing a size 14.  I am plus size yet petite in height so this over sized jacket worked great as a dress on me.  I opted not to wear a formal top but a Lane Bryant bra.  The jacket did open slightly at the bottom so I added a burgundy faux leather mini skirt in a patent finish (size 3X).  I got these Gucci glasses for a steal while doing some retail therapy.  The purple in them worked so well with the pink green and white of the kimono.  The shoes from Aldo come with velcro straps and are super comfortable and easy to get in and out of.  Cute pink lippie and earrings and this look is done and done.

 

If you’re looking for more style ideas.  Wear your kimono as a true jacket and add in a shirt and jeans.  However, if you choose to wear it just add touches that make your personal style shine through.

I first spoke about Phat Girl Fresh’s Lifestyled event in the 2017 ULTIMATE BUCKET LIST OF PLUS SIZE EVENTS post.  Day two of the Lifestyled17 was everything I need!

PHAT Girl Fresh Presents Life Styled was a celebration on women of all size.  Women of all shapes and sizes found a home here.  Did I mention the men that were in the building?!  Yesssssss And they were tall dark and handsome.  *Fans self*

This event honored six women who have work of empowered women by styling their lives in a way that empowers other women.

FLOATING TOP AND JEANS | #lifestyled17 #OOTD DAY TWO

It is the start of crop top season and I’m here for it.  This time I choose to go with showing more shoulder than stomach.  Don’t worry you’ll be seeing a lot of my stomach this Summer.  Now let’s get into this structured cotton cold shoulder top with contrasting straps.  The flared sleeves and relaxed fit is just what I needed to get the party started.  It’s definitely a wardrobe score.   This dress code winner is from the Asos collection straight size section.  I got the largest size it came in which is a 14.  So plus size ladies you don’t have to stick to just their curvy selection to get fab finds.

I couldn’t wait to wear my skinny jeans.  They are the perfect mix of comfort meets girly curves in these soft denim jeans.  I love love love this jeans.  They are fit to perfection.  They do my shape well!

I still wanted to look polished so I added chic accessories.  I paired this modern yet classic look with a pair of black heels and my memory of bag.  Just a little on my heels for those who struggle will traditional heels.  They’re laser cutouts, an open toe and a breezy lace-up detail at the shaft define a warm-weather pump finished with a stable block heel.  I love love love them.  I was going for a comfortable and fun look.  For me this was perfect for the #lifestyled17 event.  I think I nailed this season’s blue jean fashion goals.  If you were there and were one of the million people I took pictures with be sure to tag me in them.    If you didn’t make it you can see all the action from the#lifestyled17 mixer here.  Read 2017 ULTIMATE BUCKET LIST OF PLUS SIZE EVENTS so you don’t miss the next plus size event.

I landed in beautiful Atlanta with a mission.  My mission was to help in celebrating the plus community.  I’ve appointed myself as Chicago delegate for the plus community.  I fly all over showing support for others in the community.  People who share the same values I hold near and dear to my heart.

.

These values include but aren’t limited to: Being happy in your own body,  Dress in a way that makes your heart happy,  Fashion don’t stop at a size 8 and plus size women aren’t to be shamed but celebrated.
.
I met Phat Girl Fresh last year at TCFStyleExpo and I’ve since then she’s an outspoken advocate for the plus size community.  Her brand had a mixer to kick off the start of #lifestyled17 weekend.  Plus size cuties from across the U.S. and Canada came to rally behind Maui.  In her brief speech she expressed how grateful she was that so many people came out to support her event.
.
This is year one of what I hope is an annual event.  The mixer was so much fun.  I got a chance to see all my blogger boos, dance, eat, drink and be merry.  What more could I girl ask for?!  This is a real FoMO (fear of missing out) weekend.  If you can’t make it this weekend be sure to follow my Instastories so you don’t miss a thang!

This black Calla Lily Satin Ruffle Hem Dress is from the pressed english flowers collection from the Victoria Beckham for Target collaboration.  Pressed english flowers includes 13 individual pieces in plus.  The pieces range are comprised of 5 tops, 4 dresses, 2 jackets, 1 skirt and 1 pant. pieces in plus. 

Target feels this is a chic option for work or the weekend.  With it being the perfect combination of classic and fashion-forward styles.  This look that’s fashionable, yet free-spirited and timeless.  This dress is very nice.  The material feels great on.  The construction is spot on and doesn’t expose the mid section which can be an issue for many curvy girls.

Things you should know:
  • Sizing: Plus up size 3X.  I’m wearing a size 2X. I could fit a 1X however it was a little snug.
  • Material: 94% Polyester, 6% Spandex,
  • Neckline: Round,
  • Sleeve Style: Sleeveless,
  • Closure Style: Back full length zipper, Behind the neck hook, Pullover
  • Pocket Style: No pocket (This makes me sad because I love pockets)
  • Length: At knee (Just in case you’re wondering I’m 5 feet tall without heels)
  • Care and Cleaning: Machine wash, cold on  gentle or delicate.

This dress is super cute.  The black with the white calla lily is very fashionable. I played of the color in the base of the calla lily with a pop of color in my shoe.
