21Ninety’s #SUMMIT21 RECAP DAY 1

21Ninety's Summit21 Day 1, Women of color

I spent the first day of the second major event on my 2019 calendar celebrating women of color with other women of color.  Like the first event, the Blavity brand 21Ninety’s Summit21 is very F.U.B.U.

My Summit21 day began with me stopping by the registration desk.  I then headed to breakfast.  It was a great way to start my day.  Many of the attendees spent this time chatting and networking.  It was a wonderful time for me because I love to people watch.

.

facetune_08-06-2019-05-38-40

21Ninety’s Summit21 was officially kicked off with a welcome from the Blavity founder Morgan DeBaun and actress Andrea Lewis.  The hosts greeted the crowd with a lot of energy.  I was so ready for a full day of events!

First Half Of Day One Summit21

The Summit21 conference offered two “tracks” for learning.  Leadership was track one.  Entrepreneurship is track two.  There was also a Level-Up option.  You were able to move within each track as you so fit and I really like that.

facetune_08-06-2019-05-11-57

The first masterclass I attended was The Power Of An Idea From Concept To Completion at the Leadership Stage.  This masterclass was taught by Malliha Ahmad.  The class focused on how to make your ideas come to life.  She spoke about seeing your vision in real life and holding yourself accountable.

Masterclass take-away or quote: Every idea is not meant to be worked.  However, the ideas that need to be worked be sure to build a relationship with that idea.  Make that idea bae and seduce it daily.

The next course I attended was a fireside chat “The Creative’s Guide To Building A Loyal Audience with”  This fireside chat was lead by Alex Wolf and moderated by Sabine Quetant on the Leadership Stage.

Fireside Chat or quote: Understand the difference between attention and presence.  Social media can alter your self worth as a creative.  You build your business on real connection and not quick interactions.

We then broke for lunch and access to the expo floor.  I know that I wanted to spend this time grabbing a quick bite and browsing the expo.

Each attendee was given a token that allowed them to select five items from the gifting suite.  The line for the gifting suite was long as each person was given the chance to walk to the area at their own pace.

Second Half Of Day One Summit21

The third course I wanted to attend was the masterclass Build Your Brand: PR, Marketing and More with Nichole Lynel at the entrepreneurship.  I missed it because I was still in the gifting suite.

Masterclass take-away or quote:  None.

ea142cb4-a82b-4d78-95de-813789f14539

The next course I able to attended was an AMA (Ask Me Anything).  This AMA: The Price Is Tight – How To Nail Your Pricing Without Sacrificing Your Worth from the entrepreneurship stage with Jereshia Hawk.  For me, she dropped some real eye-opening gems.

AMA take-away or quote:  The transformation can’t happen without a transaction.  You can place your coffee order but until the transaction is approved you won’t receive that order.  People respect what they pay for.

2b0b6dad-78d3-4302-9122-cfc88a58fce5

From the entrepreneurship stage, I attended the fireside chat “Secure The Bag: How To Land Financial Partnerships” with Lauren Wesley Wilson Color Com Network and moderated by Marissa Wilson.  The chat was focused on host mid to large scale events though brand partnership.

Panel take-away or quote: When you reach out to brands to sponsor your event ask for enough money so that they take you and your event serious.

Day one at ended at the leadership stage with a day 2 preview and closing remarks.  Along with a practice run for tomorrow’s Before I Let Go challenge.

SHOULD THE BRANDS WE LOVE REQUIRE INCLUSION RIDERS?

INCLUSION RIDERS Black Chicago plus size blogger of color wearing red & yellow and sequins“I have two words to leave with you tonight, ladies and gentlemen: inclusion rider.” _Frances McDormand

.

.

France McDormand shook the table while giving her acceptance speech during the Oscars and introduced inclusion rider into the popular culture lexicon.  Google noted that the term inclusion rider search spiked that night.  Before you leave to go look up what inclusion rider means I tell you.  Inclusion rider is a stipulation that actors and actresses can ask (or demand) to have inserted into their contracts, which would require a certain level of diversity among a film’s cast and crew.
.
Public relation INCLUSION RIDERS Black Chicago plus size blogger of color wearing red & yellow and sequins
.
.

Director Ava DuVernay: ‘We didn’t need any inclusion riders‘. Ava Duvernay, director of Wrinkle in Time, said that there was no need for inclusion riders in her latest film because ‘we just hired talented people of all kinds and colours and we hope that more people do that.’

We would hope more people in a position of power would think like Ms. DuVernay however sadly that’s not the case.  This got me to thinking “How does that apply to the brands I support?”  As a plus size woman of color I find myself fighting this fight for representation on two fronts.  Being plus size I see many hour-glass or retouched body in plus size campaigns.  And as a woman of color in plus size or campaigns, in general, I don’t see women or men for that matter whos skins looks like mine.  Should I be happy just seeing a racially ambiguous model?

I personally believe the issue with representation starts long before the brand’s ad hits the magazine or social media.  It starts with the marketing and or PR companies many brands work with.  As an influencer, I receive a ton of emails to from marketing and public relation firms.  A quick google search will let you know who you’re dealing with.  Often times the owners, main principals or lead decision-making associates are not people of color.  Please note: When I say of color I mean any color African American, Hispanic, Asian, etc..

Marketing Black Chicago plus size blogger wearing yellow and sequins

Brands hire these firms to come up with campaigns and marketing strategies often time to reach a diverse market.  But I wonder do those same brands look at who they’re hiring to implement that diversity they seek.  I in no way am saying hiring all ” insert any minority group here” marketing or public relations firms.  What I am saying is brands would be better serviced by firms that are inclusive from the top down.

I can tell when a brand’s firm is diverse.  Their social media (Instagram) doesn’t look whitewashed.  The ad work looks realistic.  The brand’s message comes off relateable.  There is a subtle nuance that ropes you into those campaigns that groupthink will never be able to deliver.

.

.

INCLUSION RIDERS Black Chicago plus size blogger of color wearing yellow pants with sequins jacket

Now I find myself going back to my original question.  Should brands the brands we love require inclusion riders?  Or should I accept I and people like me are not their demographic?

I LOVE A DRESS WITH POCKETS

dress-with-pockets-13

There is something special about a dress with pockets.   I love them.  They make me feel like I’m on top of the world.  Pockets can take a dress from yes to yassssss!  I have a few dresses with pockets.  In the past one might say my obsession with pockets have left my wallets somewhat flat.  However, Gwynnie Bee help with all that.  Gwynnie Beee is an online women’s clothing rental subscription service for sizes 10-32.

dress-with-pockets-20

I’ll basically rent my wardrobe from Gwynnie Bee.  I’m excited to share this.  I get an endless  supply of stylish fashion options for one monthly fee.  GB offers free shipping both ways (LOVE THAT) and unlimited clothing exchanges.  This is a blessing for a girl like me that goes to many events and is always looking for something new to wear.  Or even a woman who likes to try before they buy.

Shopping takes me to my happy place, =).  Thanks to Gwynnie Bee I can now go to my happy place daily and my purse won’t take a hit.  I wanted to share these with my community because I often hear comments about the cost of plus size clothes.  I feel the pain too!  I want nice outfits but paying $100 to $200 for one look is to much.

With Gwynnie Bee you can pick from trendy, casual and professional dresses, tops and bottoms.  The pieces come in range of brands to like Eloquii, City Chic, Asos Curve, Junarose, Adrianna Papell and Modamix just to name a few.

The Gwynnie Bee subscription is very simple.  It’s only takes 4 steps.  Ok, 5 if you decided to keep your rental.  Gwynnie Bee even takes care of the laundering the clothes when they’re returned.  #winning

HOW I WORE A DRESS AS A TOP

Processed with VSCO with f2 preset

Being a black female blogger from Chicago my influence reaches many demographic.  The blog thefatgirloffashion has been bubbling under the surface for years.  As a Generation X kids I’m a products of shifting social norms.  With my mom having to work to support 3 children I was left to make many choices for myself and my younger siblings.  You can say they were the first group to fall under my influence, lol.  I can remember watching MTV and dancing in the mirror.  Or sitting in front of my television on Thursday nights and wishing I could be a Cosby kid.  They call people in my age range “Xers” to refer to an unknown variable or our desire not to be defined.  However, At some point we’ll all have to check a box or two.  That still doesn’t mean we have to be pigeonholed just because of some label.   And it’s the same with clothes.

Like people clothes don’t have to pigeonholed on a specific label.  A dress is just a top waiting to happen.  I took a gray bodycon dress and tucked it into a pair of my favorite jeans to turn this summer staple into a form fitting top.  This is great to maximize your clothes.  I also took this swimsuit cover up and paired with this causal look as a duster.  This adds a little extra pop of color to this monochromatic look with the flowers.  The duster also adds a flowy element to fitted look of the top and jeans.  Thinking outside of the box a little allows me away to bring some of my favorite summer pieces to colder months seamlessly.

I hope this little tips can help anyone who has favorite pieces that they don’t want to wait and wear.  Plus this can save us a few coins so we can go to fun events plus size events like theCurvycon.

On My Worst Behavior

sheer-denim-5

I was randomly listening music and Drake’s Worst Behavior came on.  First off this song came out in 2013.  Seems like just yesterday.  Man things get old fast.  I must have played it like 30 times.  I listen to what he was really saying.  It started feeling like it could be my 2017 theme song.

worst-behavior

Flex, I’m just flexin’
Never loved us, do it look like we stressin’?

I’m doing me and living a carefree fat girl life.  When people say they don’t like how I look, dress, or I need to coverup, To tell you the truth, I never cared!

Look at you, look at you, and look at you,
Ah, I’m glad that they chose us

You’re talking about me, you’re laughing at me and judging me but that means nothing because at the end of the day my people are going to love and support me.

Command, it’s a mission trying to fight to the finish just to see ’em all finish

I require respect and I will not stand for anything less.  I’m going to be a source of inspiration for all the girls who have ever been made to feel less than.  Remember beauty comes in all colors, shapes, and sizes.

It just seems like Drake gets me, lol….. What’s your 2017 theme song?

Late To The Party

Processed with VSCO with m3 preset

I was on the phone with a friend the other day and she was telling me about this guy she just started talking too.  She told me he had never dated a “big girl” before.  She then went on to say he made a point to say how he was looking passed her size because she was so gorgeous.  Can we pause for a moment and insert side eye emoji.  He’s so late to the party.

youre-beautiful
I had so many questions swirling around in my head.  For starters,  Where did you met this clown?  So I know where not to go.  My second question, Is he from Chicago?  Because midwest men love them some fluffy women.  They are well aware that thick thighs save lives.  Third, Girl are you really taking his backhanded compliment as a real compliment?  Honey is the thirst that real?   But that’s none of my business.  *sips tea*
At this point guys can stop saying they don’t date “big girls” as if we care.  I mean who’s mad not us!  Guys that feel that way are so late they’re not even invite to this party.  Never let anyone make you feel like they’re doing you a favor by dating you.  If plus size isn’t their preference it’s o.k..  It’s their lose not yours!  In life you must learn be happy with yourself.

5 Random Facts About theFatGirlofFashion

strapless-black-dress-rue-107-3

I started blogger because I wanted the world to know that Chicago had women that were plus size and fashionable. Overwhelming engagement thefatgirloffashion expanded to include lifestyle.   We discuss things like travel, food, and reviews. We all know my motto is “I’m happy with me.” If you’re happy with yourself than you will be more likely to live life on your own terms.  That’s why randomness is important.  With that being said here are 5 random facts about me.

Random fact number one is I’m going to Paris.  Paris, France is the plan for my 40th birthday.  I’m counting down the seconds!  I’m on the fence about how long to stay and what to do when I arrive.  Of course I’ll do all the regular tourist things but I want to see street culture off the beaten path. We’ll see.

m-a-c-cosmetics-x-taraji-p-henson-mactaraji-reviewed
Random fact two is I’ve grown into a real makeup junkie.  It use to take me about 3o mins to do my eyebrows.  I know along time but they were fleek.  Over time now I can do just as good of a job within a quarter of the time.  I use 3 products.  First brushing the hairs with an e.l.f. wand.  Then shaping with a Wet N Wild pencil and LA Girl concealer in color fawn & toast applied with an e.l.f. 1814 brush.

Random fact number 3 is that my favorite movie of all time is The Color Purple.  Followed up closely by Dream Girls.  When I first moved out on my own I didn’t have cable.  Only a VCR player.  Yes VCR, lol.  I would watch The Color Purple over and over.  The storyline was powerful and the acting was amazing.  My favorite line from the movie is captured in Miss Celie Voice.

“I’m poor, black, I might even be ugly, but dear God, I’m here. I’m here.”

Random fact 4.   I loooooove social media.  I adore being connected to people world wide.  Seeing things from the point of view others is how one grows.
We can connect everywhere.
The last random fact is that if I could move today I would move to Los Angeles
NO MORE SNOW, lol.  I love Chicago.  If I could move Chicago to a warmer climate I would do it in a heartbeat.  New York would be idea for a blogger but the weather there is no better than Chicago.  Like I said before I love Chicago so they’re stuck with me.
