How Reebok Got It wrong With Gigi Hadid!

reebok

Before I jump out the window and lose any chance as a black Chicago blogger of getting a deal with Reebok.   I want to say the idea was good but the execution was poor.  With that being said Reebok’s new  “#PerfectNever” campaign got it all wrong and here’s why.

Reebok has Gigi Hadid fighting beauty standards as the new face of Reebok’s #PerfectNever campaign.  I have the sad task of tell the good people over at Reebok that Gigi Hadid is the beauty standard.

I have nothing against Gigi Hadid.  Honestly, I don’t think about Gigi at all.  I know the media has told me she the current it model.  To that I say girl get your check.  However to the people handing her the check have several seats.
img_0537

Anyone can see that Gigi embodies the media’s standard of beauty.  Reebok has her fighting against unrealistic standards of perfection.  In the campaign’s first video, super model is seen taking jabs directly at the camera, looking like everything a little girl would hope to look like on their wedding day let alone in the gym.  Before Hadid, Ronda Rousey was the sole face of the campaign.  Rousey was a good fit.  As a non traditional beauty she spoke to me.  Reebok having a tall, thin, blonde white international super model is falling on deaf ears.

Reebok says that Hadid fit with the campaign’s core values, which mix both fitness and empowerment.  *Crickets* “[Gigi Hadid] has always turned to fitness and exercise to stay grounded, to keep her mentally focused and give her daily motivation to push through adversity,” Dan Mazei, a senior director at Reebok, said in an interview. “We couldn’t be prouder of this relationship. We feel the story of #PerfectNever is written through the strength and tenacity of people like Gigi, and that we have the opportunity to inspire and empower millions of women around the world.”

I feel the need to insert Merriam-Webster definition of adversity here.

adversity

  • A difficult situation or condition : misfortune or tragedy

I feel now feel need to insert a snap shot of Gigi bio here.

Gigi Hadid was born and raised in Los Angeles to a real-estate developer (father) and former model (mother).  Hadid has two younger siblings who is also a model, and a brother. Hadid graduated from Malibu High School, where she was captain of the varsity volleyball team as well as a competitive horseback rider. She then moved to New York City to focus on her modeling career.

img_0538

It’s good that Reebok’s #PerfectNever campaign hopes to fights beauty standards.  However using the current standard barrier of beauty as that voice against main stream media is like me attending a weight watchers meeting being held inside an Old Country Buffet.  I mean no one in the ad office thought this was a bad idea?  If not they may want to diversify the people they’re using to help push their diversity message.

Self Care | Winter Blues

winter-blues-1

Fall has just arrived and I can already feeling the start of the winter blues.  The sun is disappearing sooner making way for dark evenings.  This season I’m being proactive with some of the things I’ll be doing to help my mood.  Here are a few things I’m doing to get started.

self-care-4

Start doing daily affirmation journal.

Tell yourself great things about yourself.  Write down the great things people say about you to read later.  We easily tell others what we love about them but it’s harder to do the same for ourself.  So writing down what others find great about you will make it easier.

Shadow Flora Mini Notebook & Pen | Inspirations & Ideas Notebook |  Wild & Free Paperback Journal

self-care

Hit the delete button on your social media feeds.

We all have that one friend that is a Debbie downer.  Delete them!  You don’t have to see day after day these people and their sad Instagram post.  You are not required see their drama filled Facebook statuses.  Don’t read their woo is me tweets.  At the least mute them.

self-care-3

Give your body attention.

Wear things that feels great next to your skin.  Get a sexy grown to wear at night.  Moisture.  Dry skin gets itchy and will make you feel bad.  Self sooth.  Stroke yourself.  Look lovingly at yourself.  No one can make your body feel as good as you can.

LACE BABYDOLL  | Day-to-Night Healthy Skin Set |  Venus Butterfly

self-care-13

Fix things that annoy you.

Fix that broken zipper, that wobbly table, change that light bulb that’s out.  Fixing these small things will give you a sense of accomplishment.  Change always starts off small.

self-care-1

Be selfish.

Get something that makes you happy.  It’s Monday stop and get a new dress.  On Wednesday get a clutch.  New shoes on Sunday, Why not!  Don’t go broke now, lol.  That’ll cause other problems.

CEGINUS DRESS | Faux Suede Fringe Booties  |  Mesh Envelope Clutch

self-care-2

Get social.

Goof around for a bit.  Get out of your comfort zone, even if it’s just talking to a stranger at the bus stop.  Dance to your favorite song.  Shake your booty.  Have a good laugh even if it’s at yourself.

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table, song list

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table | Track 13) Cranes In The Sky

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table , cranes in the sky

This song speaks to what I’ve done to make myself feel better when I trying to deal with whatever I’m trying to deal with.  Be it pouring myself into my work, shopping unnecessary, or taking a lover not to feel alone.

Favorite Line: “I ran my credit card bill up.  Thought a new dress would make it better”

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table | Interlude 04): For Us by Us Master P

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table,

Master P is speaking about knowing your worth. In life, you have to know that some people will offer less than what you are worth just because they want to get over on you.

Favorite Line: “If this white man offer me a million dollars I gotta be worth forty, or fifty… Or ten or something.”

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table | Track 06)  Mad feat. Lil Wayne

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table, Mad

This song makes me think about how some white people view black people.  They don’t understand why blacks are mad about things happening around us.  They don’t deal with the feeling of always living with their backs against the wall.  Living with the unfairness.  For example, the Black Lives Matter movement.  Yes, All lives do matter but let’s focus on the black one for now.

Favorite Line: “I ran into this girl I said I’m tired of explaining.  Man this shit is draining.  But I’m not really allowed to be mad”

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table | Track 09)  Don’t Touch My Hair

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table, solange

Black people have “fit in” to be accepted.  No, don’t be so Black, please.  Being a Black woman if I stand up for myself I’m seen as being a problem or a trouble maker.  I just want to be viewed as equal.  No better than and certainly not less than.  I don’t want to have to take my braids down in order to get the job.

Favorite Line: “You know this hair is my shit, rode the ride, I gave it time/But this here is mine”

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table | Interlude 09) I Got So Much Magic, You Can Have It Kelly Rowland & Nia Andrews

Beware of cultural appropriation *drops mic*

Favorite Line: “Don’t let anybody steal your magic yeah”

Khloe Kardashian Good American

Marketing to plus size women has that proven there’s money to be made.  With lines like River Island, Who What Wear, and Boutique+ dipping their toes in the plus size market others are surely following suit.  Inspired by their belief that everybody deserves to be shown off, Khloé Kardashian and Fashion Executive Emma Grede have started, Good American, a curvy line of premium denim.  The line is offering contour waistbands, stitching details and special fabrications that give each pair a precise fit designed to flatter every curve.  They are looking to redefine the definition of sexy.

In launching, Good American, their goal is to fit women of all shapes and sizes. The collection for curvy women will officially be available on October 18th.

The brand has it’s own Instagram @goodamerican and hashtag #goodsquad of course.  Khloe took the initiative to help women of different shapes and sizes find the perfect pair of jeans.

The clothing line ranges from sizes 0 to 24, and comes in three different silhouettes: Good Legs (skinny), Good Cuts (boyfriend), and Good Waist (high-waisted). Beyond jeans, they’ll also carry bodysuits, T-shirts and sweatshirts.

I’ve been a fan of Khloé for a while but that doesn’t mean I’m going to take it easy on her.

I have a few questions myself about the line. Without having seen actual jeans in person or online outside of a few quick snapchat pics.  What’s the fit?  With this being a new brand the tailoring is a mystery.  What’s the price point (currently unknown)?  Lastly, with a name like Good American is the line made in America?  As soon as the line goes live I’ll be answering these questions and telling you whether or not Good American  is #FatGirlApproved.

The Good American brand will be sold exclusively at Nordstrom online, select Nordstrom stores and goodamerican.com.

Now released: Top 5 Picks From Good American Jean

2017 “So YOU WANT TO BE A GIRL BOSS” Panel with Nicolette Mason & Gabifresh, Garner Style & CeCe Olisa moderated by Aminatou Sow

As a plus size woman I needed theCurvycon.  Often times when I attend fashion events I’m the largest woman in the room.  Many of the looks are not even sized for me to purchase.   So when I found myself in a room full of fabulous fatties I truly felt better about myself.  Personally I don’t have self-esteem issues.  I’ve been plus size since a preteen.  I’ve always enjoyed fashion but didn’t have many options.  As an mature woman much hasn’t changed.  I’m still a plus size lover of fashion but there are a few more fashion options to select from.  But still have less clothing options to select from then my straight size friends can make even the most confident woman feel less than.  theCURVYcon reminded me that there are many fabulous women and men of size and they have her servicing fierce fashion on a silver platter.  This is why I’m excited for 2017.
