How Reebok Got It wrong With Gigi Hadid!

reebok

Before I jump out the window and lose any chance as a black Chicago blogger of getting a deal with Reebok.   I want to say the idea was good but the execution was poor.  With that being said Reebok’s new  “#PerfectNever” campaign got it all wrong and here’s why.

Reebok has Gigi Hadid fighting beauty standards as the new face of Reebok’s #PerfectNever campaign.  I have the sad task of tell the good people over at Reebok that Gigi Hadid is the beauty standard.

I have nothing against Gigi Hadid.  Honestly, I don’t think about Gigi at all.  I know the media has told me she the current it model.  To that I say girl get your check.  However to the people handing her the check have several seats.
img_0537

Anyone can see that Gigi embodies the media’s standard of beauty.  Reebok has her fighting against unrealistic standards of perfection.  In the campaign’s first video, super model is seen taking jabs directly at the camera, looking like everything a little girl would hope to look like on their wedding day let alone in the gym.  Before Hadid, Ronda Rousey was the sole face of the campaign.  Rousey was a good fit.  As a non traditional beauty she spoke to me.  Reebok having a tall, thin, blonde white international super model is falling on deaf ears.

Reebok says that Hadid fit with the campaign’s core values, which mix both fitness and empowerment.  *Crickets* “[Gigi Hadid] has always turned to fitness and exercise to stay grounded, to keep her mentally focused and give her daily motivation to push through adversity,” Dan Mazei, a senior director at Reebok, said in an interview. “We couldn’t be prouder of this relationship. We feel the story of #PerfectNever is written through the strength and tenacity of people like Gigi, and that we have the opportunity to inspire and empower millions of women around the world.”

I feel the need to insert Merriam-Webster definition of adversity here.

adversity

  • A difficult situation or condition : misfortune or tragedy

I feel now feel need to insert a snap shot of Gigi bio here.

Gigi Hadid was born and raised in Los Angeles to a real-estate developer (father) and former model (mother).  Hadid has two younger siblings who is also a model, and a brother. Hadid graduated from Malibu High School, where she was captain of the varsity volleyball team as well as a competitive horseback rider. She then moved to New York City to focus on her modeling career.

It’s good that Reebok’s #PerfectNever campaign hopes to fights beauty standards.  However using the current standard barrier of beauty as that voice against main stream media is like me attending a weight watchers meeting being held inside an Old Country Buffet.  I mean no one in the ad office thought this was a bad idea?  If not they may want to diversify the people they’re using to help push their diversity message.

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table

Solange, Tina’s daughter, Beyoncé’s sister, Julez’s mom, dropped her latest album called “A Seat at the Table and basically broke the internet.”  Solange has been working on the album since 2013.  She described the new album as “a project on identity, empowerment, independence, grief, and healing.”

A Seat at the Table consists of 11 songs, an intro, a closing, and 8 interludes. Top 4 songs. The album features collaborations with the likes of  Tweet, Lil Wayne, Master P, The-Dream, BJ the Chicago Kid, Q-Tip, and Kelly Rowland just to name a few.

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table, song list

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table | Track 13) Cranes In The Sky

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table , cranes in the sky

This song speaks to what I’ve done to make myself feel better when I trying to deal with whatever I’m trying to deal with.  Be it pouring myself into my work, shopping unnecessary, or taking a lover not to feel alone.

Favorite Line: “I ran my credit card bill up.  Thought a new dress would make it better”

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table | Interlude 04): For Us by Us Master P

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table,

Master P is speaking about knowing your worth. In life, you have to know that some people will offer less than what you are worth just because they want to get over on you.

Favorite Line: “If this white man offer me a million dollars I gotta be worth forty, or fifty… Or ten or something.”

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table | Track 06)  Mad feat. Lil Wayne

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table, Mad

This song makes me think about how some white people view black people.  They don’t understand why blacks are mad about things happening around us.  They don’t deal with the feeling of always living with their backs against the wall.  Living with the unfairness.  For example, the Black Lives Matter movement.  Yes, All lives do matter but let’s focus on the black one for now.

Favorite Line: “I ran into this girl I said I’m tired of explaining.  Man this shit is draining.  But I’m not really allowed to be mad”

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table | Track 09)  Don’t Touch My Hair

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table, solange

Black people have “fit in” to be accepted.  No, don’t be so Black, please.  Being a Black woman if I stand up for myself I’m seen as being a problem or a trouble maker.  I just want to be viewed as equal.  No better than and certainly not less than.  I don’t want to have to take my braids down in order to get the job.

Favorite Line: “You know this hair is my shit, rode the ride, I gave it time/But this here is mine”

Top 5 Tracks from A seat at the table | Interlude 09) I Got So Much Magic, You Can Have It Kelly Rowland & Nia Andrews

Beware of cultural appropriation *drops mic*

Favorite Line: “Don’t let anybody steal your magic yeah”

The Pop Tarts brand gave an exclusive concert in Chicago at the House of Blues to celebrate the new soda flavored Pop Tarts.  Dnce came out rocking the crowd with their most popular songs.  They even showed some #TBT love and gave their take on some of the must popular songs from the past like TLC’s “No Scrubs” and Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy.”  They of course closed their show with fan favorite “Cake By the Ocean.”

Ne-Yo ended the Pop Tarts’ exclusive concert in Chicago at the House of Blues.  The crowd rang out Ne-Yo’s name saying “We want Ne-Yo” as the stage was changed for his performance.  I’m here to say Ne-Yo didn’t disappoint.  He gave us songs from his long catalog.  I was so happy to see him sing the song that made me fall in love with him as an artist, “So Sick.”  He also gave his take on songs he’s written like Mario’s “Let Me Love Me”.  What peeked my interest most was Him saying he was about to release new music.  And of course he gave us a little M.J.
