5 TAKEAWAYS FROM GABOUREY SIDIBE CONVERSATION ON “THIS IS JUST MY FACE”

gabby sidibe 3“This is just my face try not to stare” Gabourey Sidibe

.

.

Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe visited the Chicago Humanities Festival to speak with Britt Julious about her new book “This is just my face“.  This hour long talk gave great insight into the person who is known internationally as Precious.

With that the first takeaway for the talk is the power of ones name.  Gabourey spoke about how for years she fought off being called “Gabby”.  As a child she found her name and the proper pronunciation of it very important.  She added that when people call her by her iconic character’s name she politely corrects them because she doesn’t want to be only known for in her budding career.

The second takeaway was her relationship with her father.  Gabby spoke about how her ideas of her father had been formed at the age of 6.  Family issues (read the book for the tea on him) caused by her father laid the foundation on how she would deal with him.  Her feelings for her dad did not change until she started writing her book.

My third takeaway was her handling of her mom.  People live their lives though their own eyes.  These same people will project their issue onto you because that’s all they know.  These people include moms.  Gabby spoke about her current views on getting married.  She gave insight on how her grandmother’s thoughts on her mom and if she would get married.  In turn Gabby’s mom shared her views to Gabby and her getting married.  Gabby in a since, stated she broke the cycle on living life though the lens of her mom.

The fourth takeaway was how funny Gabby is.  Gabby spoke about how she would love to do a dramedy.  She has a dry wit that I’m here for.  She finds herself to be funny and laughs at her own jokes.  I saw that for myself, lol.  She has lived a very interesting life that I could see myself watching a show loosely based on it.

The last and the most important takeaways ways for me was the idea that you can love and believe in God but still seek help for mental health.  Gabby joking said “I love Jesus but I needed a pill.”  She goes on to say that the black community needs to be more open about mental health issues and not making a person feel “crazy” when they do seek help.  I firmly believe this.  I’ve told people I love to see a mental health provider.  Talking to a good girlfriend is great.  Everyone needs to vent from time to time.  However, you can not unload on a home girl like you can with a trained professional.

gabby sidibe

I’m loving Gabby book.  I was over the moon to have a front row seat as she opened up about her life.  I’ve been a fan on Ms. Sidibe since seeing her in Precious.  Even though the movie was hard to watch it was great seeing a woman who looked like me starring in a movie.  As a dark skin woman of size I don’t see myself on screen as the star.  Fasting forwarding to now, I love that Gabby is not going to allow herself to be pigeon holed into the “fat friend” roles.  Many of her statements and feeling were just like mine on life, dealing with parents and choosing your own path to happiness.  I was great to see her telling her own story.  If you haven’t had a chance to pick her book “This is just my face” I encourage you to and give one to a friend.

FLOATING TOP AND JEANS | #lifestyled17 #OOTD DAY TWO

lifestyled17 33
“I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes.” _ Yves Saint Laurent

.

.

It is the start of crop top season and I’m here for it.  This time I choose to go with showing more shoulder than stomach.  Don’t worry you’ll be seeing a lot of my stomach this Summer.  Now let’s get into this structured cotton cold shoulder top with contrasting straps.  The flared sleeves and relaxed fit is just what I needed to get the party started.  It’s definitely a wardrobe score.   This dress code winner is from the Asos collection straight size section.  I got the largest size it came in which is a 14.  So plus size ladies you don’t have to stick to just their curvy selection to get fab finds.

I couldn’t wait to wear my skinny jeans.  They are the perfect mix of comfort meets girly curves in these soft denim jeans.  I love love love this jeans.  They are fit to perfection.  They do my shape well!

I still wanted to look polished so I added chic accessories.  I paired this modern yet classic look with a pair of black heels and my memory of bag.  Just a little on my heels for those who struggle will traditional heels.  They’re laser cutouts, an open toe and a breezy lace-up detail at the shaft define a warm-weather pump finished with a stable block heel.  I love love love them.  I was going for a comfortable and fun look.  For me this was perfect for the #lifestyled17 event.  I think I nailed this season’s blue jean fashion goals.  If you were there and were one of the million people I took pictures with be sure to tag me in them.    If you didn’t make it you can see all the action from the#lifestyled17 mixer here.  Read 2017 ULTIMATE BUCKET LIST OF PLUS SIZE EVENTS so you don’t miss the next plus size event.

#lifestyled17 | PHAT Girl Fresh Presents LifeStyled Mixer

phatgirlfresh“Being plus size is more than a size.  It’s a community” _ thefatgirloffashion

.

.

I landed in beautiful Atlanta with a mission.  My mission was to help in celebrating the plus community.  I’ve appointed myself as Chicago delegate for the plus community.  I fly all over showing support for others in the community.  People who share the same values I hold near and dear to my heart.

.

These values include but aren’t limited to: Being happy in your own body,  Dress in a way that makes your heart happy,  Fashion don’t stop at a size 8 and plus size women aren’t to be shamed but celebrated.
.
I met Phat Girl Fresh last year at TCFStyleExpo and I’ve since then she’s an outspoken advocate for the plus size community.  Her brand had a mixer to kick off the start of #lifestyled17 weekend.  Plus size cuties from across the U.S. and Canada came to rally behind Maui.  In her brief speech she expressed how grateful she was that so many people came out to support her event.
.
This is year one of what I hope is an annual event.  The mixer was so much fun.  I got a chance to see all my blogger boos, dance, eat, drink and be merry.  What more could I girl ask for?!  This is a real FoMO (fear of missing out) weekend.  If you can’t make it this weekend be sure to follow my Instastories so you don’t miss a thang!

#PlusInPastel | Curvy girls wear that too!

Plus in pastel 2

Pastel colors are usually described as “soothing”, “soft”, “near neutral”, “milky”, “washed out”, “desaturated”, and lacking strong chromatic content.  Pink, mauve, and baby blue are typical pastel colors.  Often times plus size women feel that they can’t wear pastels and choose to stick to black.  Here are 5 quick tips to wearing pastel for the plus size girl ready to step out their box.

I worn this pastel dress with silver.  Silver or gray goes great with the muted colors.

Pastel works well with bright colors.   This would great time to add playful accessories.

Use pastel as your pop of color by pairing pastel with neutral colors.  Try wearing pastel jeans with a nude top and shoe.

Wearing two or three pastel colors together is a great look.

You can also wear one pastel color in different shades.  That’s a great way to rock the Spring style.

#FatGirlMagic is a real thing!  I see women of size slaying daily.   I wanted to offer my take on this magical wave.  My core style has always been whimsical so this look is how I feel in my head all the time.  Some women may say “I don’t have the confidence.”  I say put of your crown and work your magic.

I say this in all my post.  I’m cheerleader for women wearing what they want.  It doesn’t have to be a two piece swimsuit it could be that bodycon you have in the closet that you’ve never worn.  Or those jeans you love but feel people might stare.   At the end of the day you must do what’s best for you.  Make yourself happy.  It’s just clothes you’ll have on something completely different tomorrow.

Use the hashtag #FatGirlMagic to be featured on thefatgirloffashion’s Facebook Page.  Show the world that beautiful, creative, sexy and bold plus size women aren’t unicorns.  We can be found in every city everywhere living life to the fullest.

Blossom is 90’s sitcom that made a huge influence on me.  Blossom was very imaginative and had an opinion about almost everything.  Just like me.  Blossom wasn’t your average girl, either, and that’s what made her special. She was quirky, had cool fashion sense and was very relatable.

My parent separated around the same time the show came out.  The show made divorce normal.  I saw a girl like me dealing with the same issue I was going though.  A lot of her feeling were my feelings.

A lot of my favorite childhood TVs show come though in my current clothing chooses.  What’s your favorite 90’s TV show.  Which one is your biggest fashion influence?
