Have you ever thought about online dating?  I’m going to dip my toe into the dating pool again.  I’ve been so focused on my blog and working 9-5pm dating has been the last thing on my mind.  I created this blog post on Tips For Plus Size Online Dating as a refresher for myself and a push for another looking to join me.  Maybe I could start us new daters a Facebook group?

 

 

Below are 10 tips for plus size dating. By the time you read this, I’ll have my profile up.  Wish me luck!

  1. Don’t waste time on the wrong online dating app.  Some apps have a hook-up only reputation.  If that’s not what you’re looking for I would stay away from those apps.  We’re all adults here you know what apps I’m talking about.
  2. A picture is worth a 1,000 word.  Use clear photos.  Don’t fill up your online dating profile with tons of pictures.  It’s not Instagram.  I selected 5 pics max.  Face shot, sitting shot, 3 full body shots.  Rect pictures in different outfits are best.  Make sure no one else is in the photos.   3. Select an appropriate username.  Remember you get from the world what you put out into the world.  If you don’t want a ton of spam messages about sex I would stay away from usernames like bigtittykitty or lilmzonlinesexy.
  4. Be honest in your bio.  Be honest from the beginning!  Lying about your age, what you do, or that you’re not really single is a no-no.  I wouldn’t put all my business out there but being untruthful is never the way.
  5.  Know what you want and don’t lower your standards.  We can’t just go for the first notification that comes our way.  With that said being said be realistic with what you want.  I don’t think Idris Elba will be sliding in my DMs.  But a can dream right!
  6. Be prepared to have something to say.  At this point, you have a choice to make.  How long do you plan on messaging before a meeting?  Are you here for a date or catfishing online messaging romance.
  7. Don’t share your other social media info.  You don’t want random people visiting your Facebook or Instagram without your knowledge.  It’s also a safety issue.  You’re a big fine woman who doesn’t need a stalker.
  8. Remember this should suppose to be fun.  Don’t get obsessed with one person.  Sis we’re not going to be waiting by the computer.
  9. This shouldn’t have to be said but I feel I must.  Don’t send money!  While you’re looking for love some are looking for a victim.
  10. Lastly, don’t let what others have to say get you down.  There are internet trolls everywhere.  Remember you have all the power and it’s called the delete button!

The IFOnly experience overall was great!  The site was very easy to use.  My experience was processed and confirmed in less than 24 hours.  The IFOnly site as well as the restaurant sent a reminder email and text.  The restaurant was lovely and the worth the value of the IFOnly price point.

I would definitely use IFOnly again.  With an upcoming trip to New York and saw an experience that has already caught my eye that.  I really like the wide range of pricing options as well as experiences to be done.

I really like that the giving aspect offered by IFOnly.  You can give to charities via the site.  You can bid on experiences for charity.  Anything from Ariana Grande Signed ‘Moonlight’ Perfume Box to a voicemail greeting from the Original ‘Star Trek’ Captain William Shatner. Kiehl’s joined forces with Feeding America® for a holiday celebration. Feeding America® has a presence in all 50 states and Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.  Feeding America’s nationwide network of 200 member food banks support 60,000 food assistance programs, shelters and meal sites. Each year, Feeding America’s network provides meals and resources to over 46 million people in the United States struggling with food insecurity, including nearly 12 million children. The Feeding America network secures and distributes more than 4 billion meals annually.

We all know the holiday can often be tougher for these family so Kiehl’s is offering a helping hand.  Myself along with other Chicago influencers and the Kiehl’s team packed lunches that were used to feed Chicagoans at Harold Washington College thru their food panty.

Kiehl’s & Feeding America® Holiday Celebration | Reason To Give

I was very happy when Kiehl’s reached out to me to participate in the Kiehl’s & Feeding America holiday celebration. In packing meals for the Feeding America® at the Greater Chicago Food Depository I was left feeling so filled with joy.  In the past I have shared before some of my family struggles when I was a teenager.  My parents divorced and my mother found herself an unsupported single mother with three children.  We were a family in need.  My mother signed us up for many of the programs geared toward helping families that need help.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository has serviced my family in the past and I’m thankful for organizations let them.  The same lunches I packed are the same meals I received as a child.  These programs not only help place food on peoples tables.  The Greater Chicago Food Depository insures those who normally couldn’t afford holiday dinner with all the fittings can still do the American tradition of  gathering around a turkey at Thanksgiving.

Lincoln Park Zoo’s Night At The Zoo offers more than just views of the zoo’s animals & gardens. There were food vendors and yes there was also adult beverages vendors servicing beer and wine for purchase.  Night At The Zoo had a boom DJ, games for my friends and I to play.

Lincoln Park Zoo Chicago “Night At The Zoo” Must Do’s

Ride the carousel: You can find near the AT&T Endangered Species section the carousel.  I felt like a big kid going around on the carousel with the wind blowing through my hair.  Best of the carousel ride is FREE! 

Listen to the Live DJs: The DJs on handle offered basically any type of music you would like.  There was a DJ playing top 40, 90s, oldies, hip-hop and electronic. 

Sip while touring the Zoo:  Most of Lincoln Park Zoo’s animal exhibits were open while my friends and I sipped on adult beverages.

Rules: All guests must be 21+ with a valid government issued ID.

It is recommended to print a paper ticket to prevent any technology complications which would prevent your ticket from displaying on your phone.

No outside food or beverage may be brought into the event.

This event will go on Rain or Shine.  Of all the nights, It rained on the night I went.

Lincoln Park Zoo Chicago #Nightatthezoo MY Final Thoughts

I found the event fun.  I did however personally thought the event was a little pricey not to include a drink and or a food ticket.  Food and drinks can be purchased separately.  Events like Grits & Biscuits and The Makossa Cookout are a little less costly.  The group that puts the event on says a large portion of the proceeds benefit Lincoln Park Zoo and helps the zoo stay free and open 365 days a year.  So for that reason, I’m going to give them a pass on the cost of the event ticket.  I believe the pricing is tiered.  The closer to the event that you purchase your ticket the more it cost.  Honestly, my friends and I purchased our tickets the week of. I was also happy there wasn’t the large crowd you would get on a regular day at the zoo.  No kids!  This may be one time was I happy to adult with other adults!  I had a good time.  This was something I had been wanting to do for a while and I glad I did.  You can learn more about Lincoln Park Zoo and all of it’s events here.

The word “petite” in French means “small”.  In fashion and clothing, a petite size is a standard clothing size designed to fit women of shorter height, typically 160 cm (5 ft 3 in).  Most people still think petite means skinny when in fact petite has nothing to do with weight.  Petite women come in all shapes and sizes, whether they’re a size 4 or 24.  Most petite clothing is designed with shorter sleeves. Rise: Many petite pants and jeans will have a slightly shorter rise than regular sizes.  Waist: To accommodate a frame that is often more compact, petite dress waistlines are often a little higher than those of regular sized dresses.

The biggest trap that women who fall into the plus status are the limited availability of those pieces that are petite.  While regular sized plus clothing are often too long forcing us petites to get our clothes hemmed.  This makes our clothes overall more expensive.  Talbots thought not only plus size women with their new collection but the petites too.

Front Pleat Tunic With Curvy Petite Slim Ankle Jean

 

This is Talbots’ front pleat tunic a variation of three-quarter sleeves. My thoughts on the Talbots’ petite plus: This year is bringing the plus community many more options than ever before.  I recently tried two pieces from the Talbot plus collection.  Of course, we all know all bodies aren’t the same.  All plus bodies are not the same.  Talbot’s petite line is a welcome addition to my wardrobe.  The denim jeans I tried are excellently made. The coloring in them (curvy petite slim ankle jean in black) are very lux.  The black in the jean is here to stay.  The jeans feel great against the skin.  They are soft yet firm by no means will they’ll fade or fall apart after a few washes.  I also appreciate the firm waistband.  A weak waistband is the worst!  What good are jeans you have to keep pulling up?  These jeans can be worn with or without a belt and you won’t have a problem.  These jeans are made well and packaged for petite plus sized bodies like mine.

Fat Girls Traveling  This group is run by plus size travel blogger From Annette With Love.  Fat Girls Traveling is the voice for the curvy, plus size, Fat Female Traveler.  They’re reclaiming the word Fat. We’re leaving the shame and stigma behind and defying the odds. We’re Going on a TCFCruise!  This group is run by plus size lifestyle blogger Marie. You asked and they listened!  She has created a plus size fashion experience and what should be an unforgettable event.  The inaugural TCFCruise, is being produced by The Curvy Fashionista and B Memorable Events!  What better way to relax a little bit, than with your plus size and curvy girlfriends, on a 5-day, 4-night cruise to Cozumel, Mexico? Another plus size group is Traveling while Plus Size!  This group is run by plus size fashion blogger Garner Style.  She say’s about her group “I’m kicking off this group while I am sitting here in the airport ready to start my trip to Tel Aviv.  This group is for the plus size women that are well traveled and the women who have never taken a trip, but want too!  I travel all the time and want to share some of my tips on reducing the anxiety of traveling while plus size. I also want this group to be a place where you can find great deals on places to go, recommended spots to visit, fabulous hotels and maybe even find a buddy or two to travel with. France McDormand shook the table while giving her acceptance speech during the Oscars and introduced inclusion rider into the popular culture lexicon.  Google noted that the term inclusion rider search spiked that night.  Before you leave to go look up what inclusion rider means I tell you.  Inclusion rider is a stipulation that actors and actresses can ask (or demand) to have inserted into their contracts, which would require a certain level of diversity among a film’s cast and crew.

Director Ava DuVernay: ‘We didn’t need any inclusion riders‘. Ava Duvernay, director of Wrinkle in Time, said that there was no need for inclusion riders in her latest film because ‘we just hired talented people of all kinds and colours and we hope that more people do that.’

 

We would hope more people in a position of power would think like Ms. DuVernay however sadly that’s not the case.  This got me to thinking “How does that apply to the brands I support?”  As a plus size woman of color I find myself fighting this fight for representation on two fronts.  Being plus size I see many hour-glass or retouched body in plus size campaigns.  And as a woman of color in plus size or campaigns, in general, I don’t see women or men for that matter whos skins looks like mine.  Should I be happy just seeing a racially ambiguous model?

I personally believe the issue with representation starts long before the brand’s ad hits the magazine or social media.  It starts with the marketing and or PR companies many brands work with.  As an influencer, I receive a ton of emails to from marketing and public relation firms.  A quick google search will let you know who you’re dealing with.  Often times the owners, main principals or lead decision-making associates are not people of color.  Please note: When I say of color I mean any color African American, Hispanic, Asian, etc..

Brands hire these firms to come up with campaigns and marketing strategies often time to reach a diverse market.  But I wonder do those same brands look at who they’re hiring to implement that diversity they seek.  I in no way am saying hiring all ” insert any minority group here” marketing or public relations firms.  What I am saying is brands would be better serviced by firms that are inclusive from the top down.

I can tell when a brand’s firm is diverse.  Their social media (Instagram) doesn’t look whitewashed.  The ad work looks realistic.  The brand’s message comes off relateable.  There is a subtle nuance that ropes you into those campaigns that groupthink will never be able to deliver.

I’m no exercise nut.   However, I did recognize I needed to get more active.  Becoming more active helps with more than just weight loss.  Be active can help with weight management.  It also helps with overall health.  So for couch surfers like me here are 5 easy and plus size friendly workout tips.

TIP 1 – Call Your Doctor  

Although moderate physical activity such as brisk walking is safe for most people, health experts suggest that you talk to your doctor before you start an exercise program if you have any unlaying health conditions.  It’s important to see your personal physicians annually even if you don’t have any medical conditions.

TIP 2 – Be Prepared

Being prepared help with the excuses.  Before you even walk out the make sure you have a small bag filled with a few things you’ll need.  In my bag, I have things like a water bottle, a clean washcloth, headphones, a backup phone battery and a small snack like a banana or nuts.  I also have my insurance card and emergency contact information.  All of these things help me avoid the “I need to head back home” excuses.

TIP 3 – Dress Comfortably 

I know life is a runway but if you’re trying to get into the swing of things when it comes to working out keep it cute yet comfortable.  Plus size workout gear has come a long way.  You can find sports bras,  leggings, shorts, headbands, there are even hijabs available now.

TIP 4 – Know Your Limit

If you’re not in a race than it’s not a race.  Know your personal limits.  I’ve workout with friends and they’re pushed me to do what they’re doing.  Don’t hurt yourself trying to keep up with someone else.  Go at your own pace.

TIP 5 – Be Creative With Your Fitness Routines

Boredom will kill the fitness well.  Joining a gym is not a must.  Something it can be a waste of money if you’re not going to go consistently.  On the other hand, going toa gym that offers different fitness course it a great way to stay engaged with your fitness.

While getting ready for my first brunch date of this spring with a few of my blogger boos in fashion I got to thinking.  What’s the foundation for a great spring brunch look?  What does it take to look fashionable yet comfortable?  How many steps does it take to look Instagram ready?

I believe anyone can look amazing at brunch in 8 or less steps.  A few springtime wardrobe staples are a feminine dress, straw bag and Keds like tennis shoes.  Those items are a most.  These can be interchanged to fit your liking.  Add a few accessories and wala MAGIC!!!!

A brunch look doesn’t require you to wear a dress.  A pair of jeans and tee could easily be swapped in for a dress if you like.  It’s just fashion!  Wear what you want.
