I spent the first day of the second major event on my 2019 calendar celebrating women of color with other women of color. Like the first event, the Blavity brand 21Ninety’s Summit21 is very F.U.B.U.
My Summit21 day began with me stopping by the registration desk. I then headed to breakfast. It was a great way to start my day. Many of the attendees spent this time chatting and networking. It was a wonderful time for me because I love to people watch.
.
21Ninety’s Summit21 was officially kicked off with a welcome from the Blavity founder Morgan DeBaun and actress Andrea Lewis. The hosts greeted the crowd with a lot of energy. I was so ready for a full day of events!
.
First Half Of Day One Summit21
The Summit21 conference offered two “tracks” for learning. Leadership was track one. Entrepreneurship is track two. There was also a Level-Up option. You were able to move within each track as you so fit and I really like that.
The first masterclass I attended was The Power Of An Idea From Concept To Completion at the Leadership Stage. This masterclass was taught by Malliha Ahmad. The class focused on how to make your ideas come to life. She spoke about seeing your vision in real life and holding yourself accountable.
Masterclass take-away or quote: Every idea is not meant to be worked. However, the ideas that need to be worked be sure to build a relationship with that idea. Make that idea bae and seduce it daily.
The next course I attended was a fireside chat “The Creative’s Guide To Building A Loyal Audience with” This fireside chat was lead by Alex Wolf and moderated by Sabine Quetant on the Leadership Stage.
Fireside Chat or quote: Understand the difference between attention and presence. Social media can alter your self worth as a creative. You build your business on real connection and not quick interactions.
We then broke for lunch and access to the expo floor. I know that I wanted to spend this time grabbing a quick bite and browsing the expo.
Each attendee was given a token that allowed them to select five items from the gifting suite. The line for the gifting suite was long as each person was given the chance to walk to the area at their own pace.
Second Half Of Day One Summit21
The third course I wanted to attend was the masterclass Build Your Brand: PR, Marketing and More with Nichole Lynel at the entrepreneurship. I missed it because I was still in the gifting suite.
Masterclass take-away or quote: None.
The next course I able to attended was an AMA (Ask Me Anything). This AMA: The Price Is Tight – How To Nail Your Pricing Without Sacrificing Your Worth from the entrepreneurship stage with Jereshia Hawk. For me, she dropped some real eye-opening gems.
AMA take-away or quote: The transformation can’t happen without a transaction. You can place your coffee order but until the transaction is approved you won’t receive that order. People respect what they pay for.
From the entrepreneurship stage, I attended the fireside chat “Secure The Bag: How To Land Financial Partnerships” with Lauren Wesley Wilson Color Com Network and moderated by Marissa Wilson. The chat was focused on host mid to large scale events though brand partnership.
Panel take-away or quote: When you reach out to brands to sponsor your event ask for enough money so that they take you and your event serious.
Day one at ended at the leadership stage with a day 2 preview and closing remarks. Along with a practice run for tomorrow’s Before I Let Go challenge.

21NINETY’S SUMMIT21 CHECKLIST | Selfie ready
Clean out our phone – This may seem very random but it’s not. There’s nothing worse than having the perfect selfie all lined up with your favorite influencer and your phone says you’re out of memory. Take the next couple of weeks and delete those old food pictures so that you’ll be able to capture all the fun without any issue.
Did you know? If you can’t decide which pics to let go of simply save them to your computer and then remove them from your phone.
21NINETY’S SUMMIT21 CHECKLIST | ready for business
Update your profile – Start updating your social media profiles. Include a clear picture of yourself or your brand’s logo within the profile picture. Also, make sure to include contact information. It’s also important to update your media kit if you have one. If you don’t have a media kit create one today.

I hope these tips help! Leave any questions in the comments?
April is the start of festival season. A plus-size fashionista only needs a few simple pieces to be in fashion for the upcoming party season, In a post, I”m sharing 3 Steps to have the perfect plus-size festival look for any spring/summer music event.
As plus-size women, we need to be seen in public spaces living our best lives. We shouldn’t be excepted to hide in our homes. While we’re out and about being visibly plus know that you can wear whatever your hard earned money can buy.
Whether you’re going to Essence fest or Coachella you’ll only need a few basic things to make you look like a festival Instagram star.
3 Steps To The Perfect Plus-Size Festival Look | Kimonos and Cover-Ups
I’m the queen of kimonos and cover-ups. I wear them year round. They are festival favs. The kimono or cover-up you wear should be based on a few factors. The weather. Is your event inside or out? Knowing that will help you in selecting the right one. You don’t what to select the cuties kimono you could find only not to wear it because it came with a heavy inner liner and it’s too hot for an out-door event.
3 Steps To The Perfect Plus-Size Festival Look | Bases and Bottoms
The weather on the day of the event will play a huge role in your outfit choice. I love having a look that can be easily switched up if the weather isn’t what I thought it was going to be. We all know rain or shine the party goes on.
I prefer loose-fitting items. I don’t want to feel super tight all day long. Many fests go from day to night. I’m also a fan of layers. Layers help adjust for those temp changes. A dress as a base with a cover-up is the perfect festival look. Shorts and tees are just as cute. At the end of the day wear what makes you feel good!
3 Steps To The Perfect Plus-Size Festival Look | Accessories
For myself, accessories are a big part of my style. I’ve said it before that being plus size my whole life accessories were often the only things that would fit me. I love purses, jewelry, and shoes. The right accessory can make and break an outfit. For a perfect plus-size festival look a crossbody is key. Crossbody bag holds all the must-have. If the festival is outdoor make sure sun protection is part of your look. Include shades and some form of headwear (hat) to protect yourself from sunburn. Lastly, wear comfortable shoes if the event is not seated which most fests are not. Grab some cute flat sandals or bomb daddy sneakers.
Within this blog post, I’ll be sharing my visit to CoverGirl’s NYC store. If you have plans on visiting New York City keep and love make-up than reading.
While in NYC for the #BrownGirlsLovePower day event I made a trip over to Time Square to visit the CoverGirl Store. The two-story store has been located at the cornor of 7th and West 48th since November 2018. it’s CoverGirl’s first ever physical retail store in the brand’s over 60 years. I love all things make-up so I know I had to make my way over to the store the first chance I got.
The CoverGirl’s NYC store had all the latest CoverGirl products in every shade and color. There were make-up stations around the story to try on the different products. If you’re ready to play with the make-up for real you can always stop by the AR glam stations where you can virtually try on makeup,
The CoverGirl’s NYC store had many associates called CoverGirl BFFs available to help with any CoverGirl question. They offered tips and tricks for makeup applications that were not overwhelming and helpful. I’m still working on my wing liner but I know where to start, lol.
This budget-friendly store is great for girls like me that often time find it hard to get lower cost makeup in darker shades. I don’t like purchasing some makeup items at the drugstore because I can’t try them first. With the store having all the foundations and concealers in the full shade range out and available to try is wonderful.
If you find yourself in Time Square I encourage you to stop by the CoverGirl Store. You’ll be available to grab some of your favorite CoverGirl products and snaps some cool pictures for Instagram!
Can’t make it to NYC but still want to get your hands CoverGirl products you can get them here.
In this blog post, I’ll be sharing my experience at Lincoln Park Zoo Chicago adults-only event “A night at the zoo.” The event offers a kid-free view of the zoo’s amazing animals & gardens.

Lincoln Park Zoo Chicago #Nightatthezoo Is Adult Fun
Lincoln Park Zoo’s Night At The Zoo offers more than just views of the zoo’s animals & gardens. There were food vendors and yes there was also adult beverages vendors servicing beer and wine for purchase. Night At The Zoo had a boom DJ, games for my friends and I to play.

.
Lincoln Park Zoo Chicago #Nightatthezoo FYIs
Rules: All guests must be 21+ with a valid government issued ID.
It is recommended to print a paper ticket to prevent any technology complications which would prevent your ticket from displaying on your phone.
No outside food or beverage may be brought into the event.
This event will go on Rain or Shine. Of all the nights, It rained on the night I went.
.
Lincoln Park Zoo Chicago #Nightatthezoo MY Final Thoughts
I found the event fun. I did however personally thought the event was a little pricey not to include a drink and or a food ticket. Food and drinks can be purchased separately. Events like Grits & Biscuits and The Makossa Cookout are a little less costly. The group that puts the event on says a large portion of the proceeds benefit Lincoln Park Zoo and helps the zoo stay free and open 365 days a year. So for that reason, I’m going to give them a pass on the cost of the event ticket. I believe the pricing is tiered. The closer to the event that you purchase your ticket the more it cost. Honestly, my friends and I purchased our tickets the week of. I was also happy there wasn’t the large crowd you would get on a regular day at the zoo. No kids! This may be one time was I happy to adult with other adults! I had a good time. This was something I had been wanting to do for a while and I glad I did. You can learn more about Lincoln Park Zoo and all of it’s events here.

Within this blog post, I’ll be sharing my first day in New Orleans. It’s my first-time traveling to the Nola. Plus it’s my first time at the Essence Festival. My first full day fell the Fourth of July. Continue reading this blog post to see how this plus size fashion blogger celebrated the birth of the nation in the New Orleans’ French quarters.

Plus Size Photo Shoot In New Orleans
I kicked off my fourth of July in New Orleans with a photo shoot. With the help of fellow blogger Shamika, I had done some research on photographers in New Orleans. I emailed a few a settled on Britt of brittsmithphotography. Which was a wise choice! Britt worked looked amazing but more importantly, she was very professional. She’s replied to my emails in a timely manner. On the day of our shot, she was on time. She was easy going and friendly. And I love my photos and I know you will too!

Dining In New Orlean’s French Quarter
I grabbed a lite bit at a placed called Willie’s Chicken Shake. The food was good but it’s a chain restaurant so if you’re looking for a down-home meal this isn’t the place to go.
I hope to find some authentic food within the time I’m in New Orleans.
.
Fourth Of July Fireworks On The Algiers Point Ferry
This being my first time in New Orleans plus it’s the holiday I know I was in for a good time. And I was right! I had a few options on what to do to celebrate the fourth of July. The bar scene in New Orleans is always fun. However, I know I wanted to see a fireworks show. When I’m home I often stay in the house and watch the firework show on T.V. unless I’m with my family. I was lucky because my hotel was only a few blocks from the Dueling Barges fireworks show. Dueling Barges fireworks show is a free event that’s part of the “Go 4th on the River” celebration held at the Mississippi River’s riverfront.
I knew this was my chance to take a boat ride on the Mississippi River. Image the view of the fireworks from a boat sailing across the river. There were two options.
One option was to book a ride in the Creole Queen steamboat and watch the show from the deck. The Creole Queen cruise started at 7 p.m., and includes an open bar, a buffet of “American favorites”, and three music room choices. Adult tickets were $129 and not in my budget so I went with my other option the Algiers Ferry.
The Algiers ferry has been operation since 1827, that can be boarded at the foot of Canal Street – right next to the Aquarium of the Americas. The ferry ride only costs $2 each way. The ferry ride is about a half hour trip each way. Because I was taking the ferry to see the fireworks I quickly took the ferry back to the other side. If you’re a land lover you can plan a picnic at Woldenberg Park, at the Moon Walk (the riverside promenade, or on the other side of the river in Algiers and watch the fireworks from there. That didn’t go as planned. I ended up oversleeping so Tot and I went to the casino nearby to people watch.
We had a blast last year for movie in the park. It was important that I share the free movie series with fellow Chicagoans and city visitors again this year. I’ll plan on going to a few. Be sure to follow my Twitter@FatGirl_Fashion or my Instagram stories @thefatgirloffashion to see what movies I’m going to see so we can meet up. All films are free and start at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday* night at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion at 201 E. Randolph St. Additionally, each film presentation will begin with a screening of a “ChicagoMade Short” – a locally-produced short film. A program of the Independent Filmmaker Initiative, the ChicagoMade Shorts Series is a celebration of the robust local independent film community and a showcase of entertaining work produced by talented Chicago-based artists. Seating at the pavilion is first-come, first-served, or seat under the stars on the pavilion’s Great Lawn. Bring your blankets, snacks, and favorite bottle of wine. Screenings begin June 5th and runs though August 21th except on July 9 at 11am. All movies will be presented on a state-of-the-art, 40-foot LED screen. Schedule is subject to change.
Directed by John Waters and starring Ricki Lake, Divine, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono and Jerry Stiller, this cult film classic follows teenager Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake) as she pursues stardom on the local television hit the Corny Collins Dance Show and rallies against racial segregation.
