Track 13) Cranes In The Sky

seat-at-the-table

The song speaks to what I’ve done to make myself feel better when I trying to deal with whatever I’m trying to deal with.  Be it pouring myself into my work, shopping unnecessary, or taking a lover not to feel alone.

Favorite Line: “I ran my credit card bill up.  Thought a new dress would make it better”

Interlude 04) : For Us by Us Master P

seat-at-the-table-2

Master P is speaking about knowing your worth. In life you have to know that some people will offer less than what you worth just because they want to get over on you.

Favorite Line: “If this white man offer me a million dollars I gotta be worth forty, or fifty… Or ten or something.”

Track 06)  Mad feat. Lil Wayne

seat-at-the-table-4

This song makes me think how some white people think about black people.  They don’t understand why blacks are mad about things happening around us.  They don’t deal with the always living with their backs against the wall.  Living with the unfairness.  For example Black Lives Matter movement.  Yes, All lives do matter but let’s focus on the black one for now.

Favorite Line: “I ran into this girl I said I’m tired of explaining.  Man this shit is draining.  But I’m not really allowed to be mad”

Track 09)  Don’t Touch My Hair

aseatatthetable

Black people have “fit in”to accepted in.  No be so black.  Being black woman if I stand up for myself I’m seen as being a problem or a trouble maker.  I just want to be viewed as equal.  No better than and certainly not less than.  I don’t want to have to take my braids down in order to get the job.

Favorite Line: “You know this hair is my shit, rode the ride, I gave it time/But this here is mine”

Interlude 09) I Got So Much Magic, You Can Have It Kelly Rowland & Nia Andrews

seat-at-the-table-1

Beware of cultural appropriation *drops mic

Favorite Line: “Don’t let anybody steal your magic yeah”

First Date At Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago

strapless-black-dress-rue-107-8

A few weeks ago I said how I was  Preparing For Cuffin’ Season.  I said how I was going to be more open to dating.  Today we have entered pre-season in the cuffin’ season and I haven’t made much progress in being cuffed.  Honestly! Truly! I haven’t taking any of my own advice.  But I’m putting my heel down.  In order to achieve anything you must have a vision.  So I thought about what I would want to do on my first date.  Dinner is a given but I would like to do something that would allow us to talk.  The first thing that came to mind is a visit to Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

I was lucky enough to see Kerry James Marshall exhibition while it was at MCAC.  I found the collection to be bold and beautiful.  A celebration of blackness.  Mr. Marshall’s work will be in Chicago until 09/25 before it’s moved to NYC where it’ll be housed at the Met.

Ideally for me spending time with a person that will help me grow as a person is best.  Art does that.  It’s a reflection of life past, present and future.  I was moved in seeing how a person could dream up something in their head and make it come to life for the world to see.  Thinking outside the box when trying to get to know a person can be so beneficial.  I’m thinking The Adler Planetarium next.

I left the museum feeling like this dating thing could be nice, lol.  So I’m going to start working on it!  I’ll let you know what happens next.

Reflecting On My Past On World Suicide Prevention Day

lane bryant self care 5

September is National Suicide Prevention Month and today is World Suicide Prevention Day.  I want to talk about this issue because in my youth I had thoughts of suicide.  Looking back 20 years later I don’t know how serious I was then.  I do  know the thoughts were there and kept entering my mind.

As a teen my parents divorced.  My father was the sole provider and when he divorced my mom it felt like he divorced me, my brother and sister too.  I don’t know if he felt that he couldn’t afford to support us or if he just didn’t want to but his lack of support left all four of us homeless.  We were forced to move in with family.  I felt they way we were treated created a horrible situation in an already stressful time in my life.  I wanted to die.

I always lived life as person who treats people well.  Being in a situation were I felt I was being treated very bad I couldn’t deal with it.  I felt like I couldn’t really talk to my mom about my issues.  She was dealing with being a mother of 3 without any income.  She had been a stay-at-home mother who  occasionally worked at Christmas time to get my brother and I gifts.  To add to that my sister was a newborn when my father left.  I also know she was dealing with a broken heart in seeing her marriage fall about.

I’m thankful that I had living angels around to help my family.  People like my cousin Keisha and her mom.  They had me over so such it was like I lived with them.  I’m grateful for the love they poured on me when I was at what felt like my lowest point as a child.

The thought of ending your life is a thought that many people deal with and the feeling can be overwhelming.  I made the choice to live because I didn’t want to see my family in more pain in having to deal with my death.  I know some people can’t look pass their own pain to see how the loss of their life would harm others.  I’m here to say that life does get better.  The pain of today will slowly get better and you can find happiness again.

I’m glad I made the choice to live.  I’m living a blessed life.  My family and friends are a great source of love and support for me.  I think about that young girl from my past and I’m thankful I didn’t let her end my bright future.

Preparing For Cuffin’ Season

dating 101

After seeing Southside With You I felt like I was hit with Cupid’s arrow.  I was in love with love but then it hit me.  I’m as single as a dollar bill.  I’ve been very single for a while now and I think I’m really to start dating again.  There are a few things I need to do to get myself in the proper mind set for dating.

dating1) Become open to dating.

I haven’t been making myself available to dating or a relationship.  My main focus has been on my blog and making it successful.

dating 1022) Shorten my want list.

My good girlfriend told me that my what I want in a relationship list was unrealistic.

dating 1043) Stop thinking all men are liars.

I can’t stand a liar so if something doesn’t add up I’m quick to be out.  I need to stop looking for the lie.

dating 1054) Start an online dating profile.

I would prefer to meet someone the old fashion way but I need to be open.

dating 1035) Go where the guys are.

I go out a lot but it’s mainly blog related and when I get to events I’m all business.  I’ll need to start going where the action is.

dating 106

Hopefully with these changes I’ll have a bae by the start of cuffin’s season.

Wish me luck!

#OOTD | Southside With You

I was feeling extra specially cute when I went to the screening of Southside With you.  I took a few e.l.f. brushes & M.A.C. products and when to work. If you follow me on Snapchat you were a witness to the glo up, lol.

Beside showing of my outfit I wanted to encourage other fat girls to show off their shapes.  I hear a lot of plus size girls saying they don’t like wearing short because of how their legs or thighs look.  I here to say again “Don’t worry about what others may think or say.” Because simply…
