The Pop Tarts brand gave an exclusive concert in Chicago at the House of Blues to celebrate the new soda flavored Pop Tarts.  Dnce came out rocking the crowd with their most popular songs.  They even showed some #TBT love and gave their take on some of the must popular songs from the past like TLC’s “No Scrubs” and Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy.”  They of course closed their show with fan favorite “Cake By the Ocean.”

Ne-Yo ended the Pop Tarts’ exclusive concert in Chicago at the House of Blues.  The crowd rang out Ne-Yo’s name saying “We want Ne-Yo” as the stage was changed for his performance.  I’m here to say Ne-Yo didn’t disappoint.  He gave us songs from his long catalog.  I was so happy to see him sing the song that made me fall in love with him as an artist, “So Sick.”  He also gave his take on songs he’s written like Mario’s “Let Me Love Me”.  What peeked my interest most was Him saying he was about to release new music.  And of course he gave us a little M.J.

wishlist

The first item on this week’s wish list is JIBRI Patchwork SilkSwing dress.  This whimsical hand stitched dupioni silk patchwork dress is everything I love.  The vintage inspired cut swing dress is designed with a high Neck and V back.  It has pockets.  You all know I heart dresses with pockets.  This dress shows how Jibri get’s it right!  I could total see myself wearing this to a holiday party.  jibrionline.com

coach boot

I selected these Coach women’s Moto Hiking Boots (Women) because Winter time Chi is right around the corner.  The biker-inspired boot is shaped from polished leather and features contrast topstitching plus has a soft, genuine shearling at the tongue.  It comes with a lace-up style front with side zip closure and synthetic sole.  I could see myself wearing these for work or play.  nordstom.com

e.l.f. ultimate kabuki brush

All my beauty cuties know I’m a huge fan of e.l.f. cosmetics.  I have a lot of their brushes but this e.l.f. ultimate kabuki brush continues to eludes me.  A lot of youtubers are saying it’s a cost friendly dup to Becca cosmetics’ The One Perfecting Brush; which is another brush I’m wishing for.  This brush is great for blending, highlighting, contouring, and stippling.  This vegan-friendly brush has bristles made of this Taklon. I can so see myself contouring with this.   elfcosmetics.com

starbucks cup

I picked Starbucks’ Pink Stainless Steel Cup because it’s shiny and it pink, lol.  Done!  O.k. and the vacuum-sealed, double-walled construction doesn’t hurt.  The siren logo really pops on the glossy pink finish.  I prefer iced coffee and other cold drinks year around so the insulating stainless steel cold cup keeps drinks cool longer while hands don’t feel a thing.  starbucks.com

burberry

Burberry by Burberry Eau de Parfum Spray has been a favorite of mine for a while.  The smell is a combination of sandalwood, amber, cedarwood, and musk.   The fragrance for me has a soft, sensual appeal. The top notes are peach and apricot.  A perfect scent for fall.  I was out shopping for foundation and gave this a new sniff.  kohls.com

Walking Tour With MixBook & Discover L.A. | #BlogHer16

mixbook 3

My mom and I hit the #BlogHer16 ground running or should I say walking, lol.  We joined Mixbook and Discover L.A. for a photography tour of downtown Los Angeles.  Mixbook is a free online service for creating and sharing the world’s most customizable photo books, cards and calendars so who better to explore L.A. with?!  L.A. tourism board, Discover L.A., was try to make sure we hit all the best spots.  Kyle Huber was there to make sure we got our spots from the prefect angle.

mixbook 6Our tour guide.

We walked roughy a 3 mile strench of downtown L.A.  We saw from great street art and learned a lot about L.A.’s city rules and it relates to art.

.

We then continued  our tour focusing on theaters that have help make L.A.  the entertainment town it currently is.

We walked roughy a 3 mile stretch of downtown L.A.

Next up was a historic restaurant in a renovated, mutlilevel space featuring American fare & cocktails called Clifton’s.  It’s the world’s largest public cafeteria and California’s lone survivor from the Golden Age of Cafeterias, is the culmination of five generations of dining innovation.

mixbook 22

The Last Book Store is a most see when in downtown L.A.

We also went to architectural landmark Bradbury Building located at 304 South Broadway at West 3rd Street.  The building was commissioned by Los Angeles gold-mining millionaire Lewis L. Bradbury and constructed by draftsman George Wyman from the original design by Sumner Hunt.  It appears in many works of fiction and has been the site of many movie like Blade Runner and television shoots and music videos.  Part of Janet Jackson‘s 1989 film short Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 was shoot there as well.

.

After viewing the Brandy building we has lunch at the Grand Central Market.   Grand Central Market has been serving DTLA since 1917.  This amazing place with amazing food has always reflected the changing population of downtown, and in the 1920s our ninety-plus vendors included multiple green grocers, fishmongers, Jewish delis, and butchers, as well as stalls for dry goods, baked goods, flowers, coffee, cheese, notions—and even one vendor who sold nothing but eggs. DTLA has been evolving ever since, and the Market has continued to evolve with it.

In 1984, downtown visionary Ira Yellin, a successful developer with an academic interest in urban planning and historical preservation, bought Grand Central Market and adjacent properties including the Million Dollar Theater, as well as the landmark Bradbury Building across the street.

mixbook 31mixbook 32

After our delicious lunch we  resumed our tour at Grand Park and then to Walt Disney Concert Hall.  The stainless steel curves of its striking exterior to the state-of-the-art acoustics of the hardwood-paneled main auditorium, the 3.6-acre complex embodies the unique energy and creative spirit of the city of Los Angeles and its orchestra.  It found it’s home due to the vision and generosity of Lillian Disney, the Disney family, and many other individual and corporate donors, Los Angeles enjoys the music of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Master Chorale and visiting artists and orchestras from around the world.

Mom and I turned in our walking radios and went to rested our feet.  The tour was great.  I learned a lot about L.A. and it’s history.

Traveling While Fat | NYC | #theCurvycon

cc nyc 24

Calling all super readers!  Have a seat and let me tell you about my trip to New York City.  I went to NYC for the second annual theCurvycon.  You can read about my theCurvycon experience here.  With this post I want to talk about where I stayed,  where I ate, seeing old friends while I was at the event as well as meeting new ones.

I started planning for this June NYC trip in November.  I feel planning ahead it key to have a successful trip anywhere.  Last minute trips are fun but cost way more than one that you’ve taken your time and planned out.  I travel 3 or 4 times a year and that’s all do to planning ahead.

To save money I took public transit from the airport because I know once in the city I would be taking ride-sharing transportation like Uber and Lyft a lot.  I know I wanted to live the good life while I was NYC so I booked a room at the Waldorf Astoria.  Yes the hotel from Coming To America.  I had stayed there before a few years away and I received excellent service from all the staff.  I’ve been super stressed out from work, family and blogging, I know I wanted to be treating like a queen on this vacay so the Waldorf was my first and only choice. All New York hotel can be costly so splitting the cost with a friend is a great idea.  I share a room with my blogger boo Melissa of fabglance.  We lived it up in a superior guest room on the 26th floor.

The Waldorf amenities are top notch.  We slept on their Serenity bed with luxury linen.   Our bath room included a marble bath with Salvatore Ferragamo towelties.  We experience historic white glove service at this official New York City landmark.

Wal 3-d

If you plan on staying at the Waldorf I suggest you request a room on the Park Ave. side of the hotel because those room are the best option for a city view.  Also request a room on a higher level to escape the street noise.

I unfortunately did have an issue with my room door.  The staff took great care of me when I advised them of the repeated trouble I had.  The manager treated Melissa and I to dinner at the hotel famous Bull and Bear Steakhouse.

The food was amazing!  I ordered the the Waldorf salad as an opener, lobster mac & cheese, asparagus as sides to my main course of Lobster.  I ended my meal with their classic red velvet cake.

cc nyc 8At dinner with Melissa.  I think we caught someone on a secret date (lol).

My #theCurvycon Experience

theCurvycon TFGOF.JPGPictured: theCurvycon co-founders Chastity Garner Style Valentine and CeCe Olisa

As a plus size woman I needed theCurvycon.  Often times when I attend any fashion event I’m the largest woman in the room.  Many of the looks are not even sized for me to purchase so when I found myself in a room full of fabulous fatties I truly felt better about myself.  Personal I don’t have self-esteem issues.  I’ve been plus size since a preteen.  I’ve always enjoyed fashion but didn’t have many options.  As an mature woman much hasn’t changed.  I’m still a plus size lover of fashion but there are a few more fashion options to select from.  But still have less clothing options to select from then my straight size friends can make even the most confident woman feel less than.  theCURVYcon reminded me that there are many fabulous women and men of size and they have her servicing fierce fashion on a silver platter.

theCurvycon is a two-day event that connects top plus size brands, gorgeous fashions fans, shopaholic, bloggers and their readers.  There was something for every type of curvy chick.

Day one was all about healthy curves.  There was a full workout session hosted theCurvycon co-creator CeCE Olisa.  She was accompanied by body positive health instructors Jessamyn Stanley and Anowa Adjah.  theCurvycon provided yoga mates for everyone who needed one at no cost.  This small gesture was wonderful because some of the attendees said they hadn’t worked out in years.  Another attendee noted it was good working out with a bunch of women that looked like her while being instructed by women that also looked like her.

theCurvycon TFGOF 1Pictured: Jessamyn Stanley and Anowa Adjah directing theCurvycon fitness class

Day one of theCURVYcon for regular ticket holders was concluded with Dia&Co’s sip and shop hosted by plus size swimsuit designer/blogger Gabifresh.  Platinum ticket holder were whisked away to a cocktail reception with Gwynnie Bee.  Gwynnie Bee treated the platinum holder to food, fashion and fun.  All things I love!  They even got a first look at the new Rachel Antonoff collection for Gwynnie Bee.

Gwynnie Bee‘s theCurvycon platinum holder cocktail reception

Day two was jammed packed with panels on everything from plus size shopping issues,  Becoming a successful blogger/vlogger,  achieving real confidence, dating, the body positive movement and everything in between!  While all the panels were happening there were many plus size vendors selling so many items to cater to the plus size shopper.

theCurvycon co-founders gave a talk called “Designing your Curves” with Ashley Nell Tipton, winner of Project Runway.  I was great to hear about how she is overcoming her own weight struggles.  I asked  Ashley about her own personal style.  She quickly answered “Pinup, A classic look with a sexy edge!”

Designing your Curves was followed by a lunch -n- learn called Finding Your Personal Style.  The panelists each spoke on how they navigated though the negative noise to find their voice and come into their own personal style.

Designing your curves was followed up with a talk with celebrity stylist Thomasina “Goo Goo” Atkins.  Known for dressing her sisters, gospel superstars Mary Mary,  Goo Goo said “It’s ok to show a little skin in church just be respectable with it.”

There was a panel called “Dear Retailer”  This panel was standing room only as many plus size fashionistas used this was an opportunity to voice their issues with retailers over everything from cost and quality to plus options and the timeliness of fashion trends.  JCPenney’s VP of Women Brand Trend Design, Nathan Laffin, said “The plus community is very organized and is being heard.  The plus size buying power is not being over looked.”

thecurvycon dear retailerPictured: “Dear Retailer”Panel

Day two ended with a conversation on “The Art of Dressing Curves”and theCURVYcon organizers, Chastity and CeCe, announcing that theCURVYcon would be moving from June and leaving what has become to be known as Full Figure Fashion Week to become a part of New York’s Fashion Week in September.

Just when I thought it was over Instagram star Tokyoxvanity came and rocked the crowd with a special performance.

theCurvycon left me with my soul feeling blessed up! The plus community was in full force.  Chastity and CeCe allowed women of size to say #HEREIAM!  I’m thankful to all my blog and social media friends that read my thoughts who recognized me while I was there and expressed to me that my voice is being heard. Please know all the selfies we took, the laughed we shared and stories of confidence in the face fear will be forever etched on my heart.  Thank you XOJane for the opportunity to cover this amazing event.  I can’t wait to see what theCurvycon will bring next year.  Tickets for theCurvycon 2017 went on sale Sunday and already have buyers.  I’ll be there!

Cuba By Way of Southwest

I’m planning on going to Cuba soon.  Yes Cuba!  I’m doing a lot of research so I’m going to share info I’ve found for other looking to travel to this hot new location.

The number one question I’m asking myself what city to visit in Cuba how to get there?!

When I visit Cuba I plan on visit a larger city.  A larger city at this time is just the wiser choice for a person traveling by themselves or not part of a tourist group.

The ten largest cities in Cuba

City Population Province
1 Havana* 2,135,498 Havana*
2 Santiago de Cuba* 425,851 Santiago de Cuba*
3 Camagüey* 305,845 Camagüey*
4 Holguín* 277,050 Holguín*
5 Guantánamo 207 857 Guantánamo
6 Santa Clara* 205,812 Villa Clara*
7 Las Tunas 153,982 Las Tunas
8 Bayamo 147,563 Granma*
9 Cienfuegos* 144,207 Cienfuegos*
10 Pinar del Río 137,523 Pinar del Río

*The city or province has an airport in

Now that we have some city options we need to know where the airports are and who flies there.

Havana will without a doubt be the number one location to visit in Cuba.  But there are offer location that will other a great Cuban experience.

Applications from six U.S. carriers to serve some of Cuba’s other nine international airports were approved in full, handing awards to American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Silver Airways, Southwest Airlines Co. and Sun Country Airlines.  The winning airlines are required to begin their flights within 90 days of the start dates in their applications, which suggests services will begin this fall or winter.

Cuban airports are open to as many as 10 daily round-trip flights from the U.S., airlines can apply at any time for the additional routes.

My airline of choice is Southwest.  They offer the must customer friendly prices and over all customer service.  They’ll be flying later this year to Santa Clara and Varadero Airport.  They’re awaiting a decision on its Havana application.

With Cuba being a new location for the regular travelers where to stay is a huge question that’s still being answered.  Cuba isn’t really ready for a full on slot of American tourist just yet.  So the next question will be where to say?!

Traveling While Fat | Toronto

blogger-image-678331930

I’ve finally settled back in from my vacation.  I went to Toronto, Ontario Canada.  I’ve been to Toronto many time however this was the first time I went with my good friends Dana and LaMara.  Yes! The Passport Posse was back together.  It was great seeing LaMara again.  She has moved away to start her new life with her fiancé.  With us both being busy living life we don’t get to talk as much as we use to but seeing her again it was like she never left my side.  Dana, My anchor is always fun and is my go to travel partner.  She preparing to move away also witch made the trip bitter sweet.  Dana pointed out that I was a “good time cry baby.”  Which is true.  Happy times brings the tears and yes they flowed.

TRAVEL1

The flight from Chicago is a short one.  I choose to fly Porter Airlines  (www.flyporter.com).  I had used Porter once before when I went to Montreal.  The service was first class and wanted to use them again.  Another bonus of using Porter was the airline flew in Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) only 1.5 miles from downtown Toronto.  The Bishop airport is the smaller of the two Toronto airports however it is idea for a traveler staying in or near downtown Toronto.  It’ll save you time & money from trying to make it from the big airport witch is much farther away.

The airport was a short distance from our hotel.  I’m a loyal HHonors member.  HHonors is a loyal points program ran by Hilton hotels world wide (www.hilton.com)  I enjoy Hilton properties because for me they offer a standard of excellence.  I lived at a Hilton DoubleTree for a year.  Yes, lived.  It was my full time home and I haven’t stayed at another hotel since if Hilton is an option.

TRAVEL6

For this trip I stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Toronto Downtown.  I used the prepay option for an additional saving.  I suggest only using this option when your plans are set in stone because it’s nonrefundable.  The hotel staff was amazing and very knowledgeable.  The hotel was in one of the 5 China towns located in Toronto.  It was also about 3 blocked from Eaton Centre.  Eaton Centre is the starting point for everything in Toronto.  It’s the largest shopping center in downtown Toronto and offers shopping options for all budgets.

I took a double decker bus tour with  citysightseeing (citysightseeingtoronto.com).  This is a on and off tour that goes all over the city.  The tours guides offer did you know type information though out the tour.  From start to finish if you choose not to get off it’s about 2 hours tour.  Again I prepaid for the tour to save of cost.

trav1trav2trav3trav4

I ate at many great places while in Toronto.  Two however hit a high note.  One was Duffs Famous Wings  (www.duffsfamouswings.ca).  Walking down College street looking for a meal and a drink Duffs’ pulled me in by my noise and was no disappointment.  I tried 3 of their many favors.  I had the hot, hot honey garlic and bold BBQ.  I also tried 3 of their dipping sauces Duff’s Blue Cheese, Duff’s Creamy Dill and Ranch.  It also came with a side of delicious fries.  At the servers suggestion no on the menu I had a drink of Jack with cold apple juice.  It left me with a smile.

The second restaurant and the main reason for my trip was lunch at the famous Resturant360 at the CN Tower (cntower.ca).  I’ve been wanting to dine there for years and never got the chance.  It was everything I’d imagine it would be.  While dining you are spinning 360° at one of the highest points of Toronto.  This gives you an amazing airy view of all of Toronto.  For a saving I choose lunch over dinner because the menu is a little pricy.  I scheduled lunch at the latest time possible before dinner service. I had the prix fixe 3 course lunch.  As an appetizer I had the classic shrimp cocktail witch included cognac infused cocktail sauce.  My main course was cold smoked long bone pork chop with caramelized onions.  It was plated with spaghetti squash,  cranberry gastrique & rosemary jus.  My last and dessert course was white chocolate orange cheesecake.  It was not only tasteful it was also filling.

With the prix fixe lunch option you receive passes to the glass floor that looks down from seems like the top of the world.

This trip to Toronto was the best ever for me.  To be with my good girlfriends while exploring new places is what the good life means for me.  Be sure to use the hashtag #travelingwhilefat on social media to see all the pictures & video where you can find thefatgirloffashion.com

theCURVYcon 2016 | A plus size event

thecurvycon

I did an interview with Chastity Garner Valentine of Garner Style All things Garner Style where I spoke about theCurvycon.  I’ve started to get asked question about theCurvycon so I decided to do this blog post.  The number one question I was ask if I’ll be going to theCurvycon 2016?
The answer is YESSSSSSSSS!!!

TheCurvycon is being held June 17 – 18, 2016 at Metropolitan Pavilion West in New York City.

theCurvycon is a two day event that will bring plus size Brands, Fashionistas, Shopaholics, Bloggers and YouTubers into one room, to chat curvy, shop curvy and embrace curvy. Come spend the day with us as we embrace our curves, do a little shopping, and tackle topics like confidence, fashion and style, health, fitness, dating, body positivity and everything in between!
theCurvyCon

This two day event curated by Chastity and her Curvycon partner CeCe Olisa of Plus Size Princess.  Chastity shared that theCurvycon started as a conversation her a CeCe had.  The idea lit fire after the creator of Full Figure Fashion Week announced that 2014 would be the last year for the plus size fashion event.  FFFWeek didn’t end and now plus size fashionistas have more options to when it comes to conference style events.  I talked about these events in a post Plus Size Week in NYC.  Get the latest info on theCURVYcon 2016 below.
