Using My Miss Celie Voice

In blogging the pitch is everything.  I think the ask is bigger.  Ask and you shall receive.  That’s not always true but if you don’t ask you’ve already given yourself a no.  Don’t be afraid request for an opportunities.  Whether is business or personal.  Make your presence known.  I recently read a blog post about plus size women not being the chances in business as their smaller counterparts.  As a plus size black woman in America I’m not the “idea of media beauty”.  I know how I look causes some brands not see the value in me.  That doesn’t mean I’m not beautiful.  A no just means it wasn’t for me.

In life people will push you aside do to their personal issue with how you look.  That’s no excuse when it comes to being the best you.  Use your voice.  I struggle at times thinking I’m not good enough when I send a request.  I have to step back and say “I’m worth it!”

My favorite movie is the Color Purple.  In the movie Danny Glover’s character, Mr., says this to is wife “Your black, you’re poor, you’re ugly, you’re a woman, you’re nothing at all!”  These messages are pushed on many women daily not just women of color.  Know you have value.  You are worth it.  Don’t be afraid to ask for what you’re worth.

In my loudest Miss Celie voice

“I’m poor, black, I might even be ugly, but dear God, I’m here. I’m here.”
