Sally Beauty Can’t Be Trusted With Black Women’s Hair
The Sally Beauty brand posted a now-deleted post on their social media channel. Basically, the video features a Black woman straightening her hair using a Sally Beauty brand ion hair tool. The product is the Luxe Solutions by ion Luxe Cold Vapor Styler.Â
Let’s talk about the product. The product claims is cold vapor is supposed to be better than steam and its ultrasonic technology transforms water into cold vapor, adding optimum moisture and maximum shine to hair for smooth, sleek results that last longer. What I’m focused on is the claim that it’s effective on all hair types.Â
Sally Beauty VS Black Social Media
Effective on all hair types. Let’s watch the Sally Beauty now-deleted video has Black social media in an uproar just two short days into Black History Month.
Deleted Sally Beauty Video via TSR
Certainly, that video is a mess. It’s a shame that this creator would turn that content over to a brand believing it was worth submitting. I don’t know her nor have I seen any other content of hers. I can say this. Whether this content was paid or unpaid. The thirst to work with Sally Beauty was real.Â
Surely, I know her joy. A national brand slides into your email box. Paid or not you immediately say yes. After being an influencer/ content creator for years now I’ve learned that responding no more times is the best answer. Â
I’m not going to give too much to this young lady because I don’t know Sally Beauty’s ask or how much she was paid. If her bills are backed up she did what she needed to do to get the check to clear.Â
Regardless of the payment if Sally Beauty asked me to straighten my natural hair it would have been a quick no. I have alopecia and wear wigs and weaves. Now that I have brought up wigs and weaves look at this clip from the product video from Sally Beauty’s YouTube channel.  Â
Sally Beauty’s Real Problem
First, Sally Beauty’s real problem is the lack of passion. This lack of passion can be found on every level based on this Luxe Solutions by ion Luxe Cold Vapor Styler rollout. It’s like schools. You have students, teachers, and principals. You can’t just blame one of the three for a failing school. It’s a collective.Â
Second, from top to bottom, Sally Beauty needs to review who not only approved the now-deleted social post but the YouTube video using a Black model wearing a wig. If the styler is not for every texture just leave that verbiage out. Undoubtedly, that team needs to be looked at as well. Subsequently, the YouTube video hair stylist needs to go. Each person who worked on this product has not lived up to Sally Beauty’s 2020 relaunch motto.Â
In Sally’s Beauty’s 2020 relaunch, the brand stated their motto as “Unleash Your PROtential:” It was a call to action communicating to customers that Sally Beauty is committed to empowering beauty enthusiasts to achieve salon-quality results from the comforts of home. Nothing about either video speaks to that. Meanwhile, they’re deleting media that’s calling out customer’s issues doesn’t help. What would have been better if that same social media team had never posted such trash content.Â
In conclusion, some people need to be fired! Down to the person who posted it. Specifically, I’m not sure if like many other brands if Sally Beauty has let go of their diversity and inclusion team. Undoubtedly, someone needs to wake them up and tell them there is a lot of work to be done. Lastly, They need to make sure their employee feel free to voice their ideas and concerns. Emphatically I’m left believing Sally’s open-door policy is broken.Â
