Dark Skinned Women, The Plus-Size Community & Social Media

In this blog post, I’m collaborating with two other influencers to discuss dark-skinned women in social media and ask the question on all of our minds.  Is there a place for dark-skinned women, the plus-size community & social media to coexist?  Beyond this topic, we also came together to support another dark-skinned content creator Blake of Signed, Blake.  Keep reading for my thoughts on dark-skin women & the plus-size community, and check out how we each slayed Blake’s Amazon The Drop collection.

Dark Skinned Women, The Plus-Size Community & Social Media

Dark Skinned Women & The Culture

It was Tupac who said “Some say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice. I say the darker the flesh then the deeper the roots.”  And how he remembered Marvin Gaye singing to him and how he had him feelin’ like black was the thing to be.

I couldn’t agree with Pac more.  Black is the thing to be.  I love everything about being a Black woman.  Beyoncé said that brown skin girls are the best thing in the world and I agree with her also.

Dark-skinned women and Black culture have a seemingly love/hate relationship.  It feels that the features of dark-skinned women are wanted and desired by everyone.  Sadly, these same features are ridiculed on Black women most of the time.

Dark Skin Women, The Plus-Size Community & Social Media

Being a plus-size woman on social media can be a lot.  Adding in the issue of colorism is enough for any woman to want to log off forever.  When our photos are shared among the plus-size community there is love and it can be love overflowing.  However, when pictures and videos go viral they go outside of the plus-size community.  Then, not only are people commenting on the woman’s outfit, they comment with assumptions on her health status and personality.  When she has a darker tone, dog-whistle comments about her race are often spewed also.

Within the plus-size community, it’s well known certain body types are considered more preferable.  However, what is not spoken about is how white, ambiguous, and lighter-skin bloggers are pushed to the forefront of the plus-size movement.  I would love to see a variety of women being given the chance to showcase their plus-size style.  And I know I’m not the only one that feels this way.  We need to see plus-size influencers that are Asian or Hispanic, along with Caribbean, African, and American Black women with darker skin tones.  It’s time for us to see them doing collaborations, being featured in advertisements, and on social media.  All of these marginalized groups deserved to be represented.

Dark Skinned Women & Support

Dark skin women, like non-curvy plus-size influencers, need to be supported more.  Showing support is easy and FREE!  You can do something as simple as liking and commenting on a post when you see a darker-skinned influencer, for instance.  Share our content can make a huge impact.

Chasi Jernigan & Pepper Martin

Next, in collaboration with two of my favs.  Chasi and Pepper are not only beautiful, they are stylish.  With all of us being plus-size bloggers of a darker skin tone we wanted to amplify dark-skinned voices in the plus-size community.  Lastly, I’m glad we came together to support another darker skin content creator Blake of Signed, Blake.

She recently did a collection with Amazon The Drop.  If you’re not familiar with Amazon The Drop it’s a series of limited edition collections designed by influencers.  The Amazon The Drop collection is inspired by global style and is shoppable for 30 hours only.  Each one of choose a made-on-demand look and styled it in our own way.

In conclusion, congrats Blake, I’m a fan of the whole collection.  I also hope you love how we took your creation and made it our own!
