Victoria Secret Fashion Show Cancelled | Why?!
In this era of cancel culture, we see the masses be outraged over one thing or another. We then see the masses say we’re done done with “{insert any name here}.” This modern-day internet phenomenon where a person or a brand can be ejected from influence or fame because of questionable actions.
This form of public shaming ends just as quickly as whatever the particular outage that began it. However, Victoria Secret hasn’t gotten off so easy. The culture has really been holding VS accountable for their problematic behavior. Is the Victoria Secret Fashion show being canceled proof that the once can’t miss lingerie brand is feeling the burn on cancel culture? Â

Victoria Secret Fashion Show Cancelled | Declining Sales
The company was founded in 1977 as a response to packaged underwear, which the brand’s founder considered to be “ugly, floral-print nylon nightgowns”. Fast forward to 2019 and Victoria’s Secret is the largest lingerie retailer in the United States. But they don’t cater to the largest market in the United States.
In 2016 the company discontinued its print catalog and dropped certain categories of clothing such as swimwear. Sales revenue continued to stagnate and drop in early 2017. Then in 2018, the CEO resigned due to farther declining sales.

Victoria Secret Fashion Show Cancelled | Controversial Comment
The internet was on fire when in VS’s CMO Ed Razek made the controversial comment while being interviewed by Vogue that the company doesn’t cast transgender or plus-size models in its annual fashion show. “Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show? No. No, I don’t think we should. Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy. It’s a 42-minute entertainment special. That’s what it is.” It must be a twisted dark fantasy because VS then saw a 40% stock plunge in a single year followed by Victoria’s Secret announcing they will be closing 53 stores in the U.S.
Razek later issued an apology, stating “My remark regarding the inclusion of transgender models in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show came across as insensitive. I apologize. To be clear, we would absolutely cast a transgender model for the show.” What about plus-size models?Â

Victoria Secret Fashion Show Cancelled | The Forgotten 67%
67 percent of women in the US is a size 14 or higher. Victoria Secret is not only missing the mark by only making the lingerie available only up to a size junior plus size 16 (waist 34). They are also missing a large share of the market. VS was called out in 2008 with the article “Victoria’s Dirty Secret: How Sociocultural Norms Influence Adolescent Girls and Women.” The article spoke about “Women’s body dissatisfaction is influenced by sociocultural norms for ideal appearance that are pervasive in society and particularly directed at women.” How it’s the norms tell women that they are valued for their bodies, physical appearance, and scale of attractiveness.
Why was the Victoria Secret Fashion show canceled? The official answer: L Brands — the parent company of Victoria’s Secret — wants to “evolve the marketing” of its signature lingerie brand, and the show itself had no immediate impact on sales of its bras and underwear. With brands like Playful Promises, Rihanna’s Fenty Savage, ASOS Curve, and Figleaves just to name a few in a race to replace Victoria’s Secret. The lingerie giant is more vulnerable than at any point before.
My body is not Victoria’s Secret approved but there are many brands that are waiting in line to collect my plus-size dollars. If VS doesn’t get it together and step into the inclusiveness of that is the future they’ll be like other brands from the “gone out of business” history.

Loved this!! As a teen, I suffered with bulimia for close to a decade. During that time, I was VS obsessed, because it was what I thought women were supposed to look like. Now, I dedicate much of my time advocating for fuller figures and plus-size women. I almost lost my life, because I thought society hated curves. Even though I almost lost my life to bulimia, I’m happy I was able to learn and grow to see that all bodies are beautiful. VS isn’t going to survive unless they grasp that women are starting to embrace their bodies just as they are.
