Who is Nina Chanel Abney?

Nina Chanel Abney is a Black woman artist born just outside of Chicago in Harvey, Illinois.  Now based in New York the contemporary artist and painter is making waves.  Abney uses her art to explore race, gender, pop culture, homophobia, and politics.  Best known for her colorful graphic large-scale paintings.  Four of which are included in the 30 Americans exhibition organized by the Rubell Museum of works by African American artists of the last three decades.

Through a bracing use of color and unapologetic scale, Abney’s canvases propose a new type of history painting.  One grounded in the barrage of everyday events and funneled through the velocity of the internet.  The effect is information overload, balanced with a kind of spontaneous order, where time and space are compressed and identity is interchangeable.

Since his game-winning shot that brought championship glory to North Carolina, Michael Jordan has been at the forefront of basketball consciousness. He took the court in 1985 wearing the original Air Jordan I, simultaneously breaking league rules and his opponents’ will while capturing the imagination of fans worldwide.

Nina Chanel Abney’s undefinable style steers the Air Jordan 2 into a bold new lane. Maintaining the sleek look of the ’86 icon, this version harnesses Abney’s artistic sensibility to make a powerful statement. The rich mixture of textures on the upper is highlighted by artisan detailing, a new perf pattern, and flashes of Gym Red. And check out the oversized hangtag, Abney’s pop-surrealist take on a double-teamed MJ breaking free from defenders. Her illustrations, full of angular figures and vibrant colors, jump to life from the ornate silver frame. The attention to detail doesn’t stop there—the shoebox itself is covered in Abney’s art, building anticipation for what’s inside and serving as another reminder that creativity can’t be contained.

  • White and Gym Red

The Nina Chanel Abney x Air Jordan 2 Retro SE updates Michael Jordan’s second signature model with a modern, minimalist design — a stylistic departure from the contemporary artist’s typically densely layered paintings. The stripped-down white leather upper is fortified with a lizard-textured midfoot overlay and an oversized heel counter in a bold crimson finish. A Nike wordmark appears on the heel tab, while mismatched sock liners feature a Jumpman logo on the left shoe and ‘Nina Chanel Abney’ branding on the right. Lightweight cushioning is provided by an off-white polyurethane midsole, supported underfoot by a two-tone durable rubber outsole.

  • White and Malachite

The upcoming collaboration features premium white leather upper bases accented by reptile print overlays and suede at the toe regions. Other detailing includes contrasting green heels and pull tabs, along with off-white tone laces, specially printed insoles, and a hangtag with Abney’s artwork. Rounding up the design of the shoe are vintage-like “Sail” hue midsoles paired with green and gray rubber outsoles.

Why does it matter?

First, because it does!  Having brands like Jordan and Nike collaborate with Black tastemakers like Nina Chanel Abney is very important. Voices of Blacks, of Black women, of Black queer women, need to be heard.  A life lived by people in this intersectionality is often the best the culture has to give.  Their lens on life is touched by so many things that when they share their message it resonates with the masses.  It matters because Black women creators are an important voice in sneaker culture.  And their buying power is also often times unmatched.
