In reading thecurvyfashionista I saw the site’s founder challenged media outlets to cover the plus size beyond standard topics. In the article Plus Size Media Topics that Should Get More Coverage one topic mention was Confidence, Body Image, and the Plus-Size Woman. Today I take up that challenge.

Confidence, Body Image, and the Plus-Size Woman
The world of a plus-size woman can feel extremely segregated. This is something I experience both as a black woman and a fat woman. It can be hard to manage your confidence and body image as social media tells you as a plus-size woman you’re not good enough.

Confidence
con·fi·dence | \ ˈkän-fə-dən(t)s , -ˌden(t)s \
1a: a feeling or consciousness of one’s powers or of reliance on one’s circumstances
Confidence is offend taught to plus size women as a personal matter. People always say it’s called self-confidence. Yes it’s self-confidence however, sometimes it takes a village to build that confidence up. Often times I see a picture of a friend and I’m like yaaaaaaaaassssssss BITCH!!! You did that!!!!!!. Their response to me after they’ve picked themselves parts is “Look at my arms.”
There are so many plus-size women who have developed the idea that if they’re not shaped like an hourglass they’re less than. Removing this body-shaming trope will take a community effort. As always charity starts at home. Be kind to yourself. And when a friend asks how something looks don’t project your issue on them. Just because you wouldn’t wear doesn’t mean they shouldn’t.

Body Image
Medical Definition of body image
: a subjective picture of one’s own physical appearance established both by self-observation and by noting the reactions of others
The keyword is subjective. Like confidence, How one pictures one’s own physical appearance established both by self-observation and by noting the reactions of others. Issues with one’s body image are not exclusive to plus size women.
Fat women just seem to be the butt of all the joke which affect our subjective body image mindset. Also having to deal with online troll acting like doctors commenting about plus-size women’s health status under fun pictures at the beach. Body image issues can leave plus-size women feeling ignored and misunderstood when trying to explain how it’s ok to love their plus body as is.

Plus Size
The following comments why come off random. What is plus-size? The term plus-size is very subjective. My hope is to start a conversation. Leave a comment telling what size do you think plus-sizes start? Also what is the minimum a plus-size brand should end at? My size ranges from 16 to 20 depending on the garment. Having a petite frame I’ve been told I’m not really plus. I’ve seen with size 14 women with very small waistlines who people say are plus-size. So let’s get an understanding. What is plus-size?
